With 12 of a possible 14 wrestlers advancing to Saturday morning's semifinal round, Glenelg leads the team standings of the Howard County wrestling tournament, 107-96, over defending county, regional and Class 4A-3A state champion River Hill. Glenelg (2007, 2008, 2011) and River Hill (2000-2004, 2009, 2012) have combined to win 10 Howard County tournaments since 2000. The Hawks, who won the Howard County regular-season title, advanced 10 wrestlers into the semifinals, including defending county champions Cory Daniel (195)

Winters Mill hadn't really been tested in a state dual meet all year. On Saturday night at North Point, that all changed. The No. 2 Falcons got a pin from senior Chase Cullison at 3:44 in the second period over No. 9 Glenelg's Anthony Pagnotta to give Winters Mill its second consecutive Class 2A-1A state dual meet title, 35-30, over the Gladiators. Winters Mill entered the final match trailing, 30-29. "Let's just say I'm speechless," Cullison said after the match. "Other than that, no comment.

Varsity boys basketball No. 2 Mount St. Joe tops Glenelg Country Kameron Williams led all scorers with 24 points and Phil Booth had 23 as No. 2 Mount St.Joseph beat visiting Glenelg Country School, 73-60, in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference boys basketball Monday. The Dragons had a 39-35 lead at the half but were unable to hold it in the second half as the Gaels (23-5) pulled away. Glenelg Country's Warren Powers scored 17 points. Ben Franklin-Masonville Cove 57, C. Milton Wright 37: Byron Hawks scored 14 points and Donte Collins had 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Bayhawks beat the visiting Mustangs from Harford County.

Vernon E. Seibert, a former athletic director and coach at Glenelg High School who had been an outstanding football player during the 1940s at College Park, died Saturday of cancer at Union Hospital in Elkton. The longtime Columbia resident was 88. "You could write a book about Vernon Seibert. What a character. The stories about him are legend," said Dennis P. Cole, who had been head football coach at Glenelg in the 1980s and retired five years ago. "He was always held in high-esteem but was not the kind of buddy-buddy type of football coach when it came to the kids," he said.

College lacrosse Glenelg midfielder Lutts signs with Monmouth Kendall Lutts (Glenelg) has signed a national letter of intent to play for Monmouth starting in the 2014 season. Lutts has helped lead the Gladiators to a 24-5 record over the past two seasons. The midfielder, who plays club lacrosse with the Rebels, was an All-County honorable mention selection in 2012. Lutts also plays field hockey for the perennial state champion Gladiators. "Kendall has wonderful stick skills and reads the game well," coach Denise Wescott said.

Division II Lynn University announced the hiring of former Maryland defensive midfielder  Brian Kingsbury as its inaugural men's lacrosse coach Wednesday afternoon. Kingsbury is tasked with building the Fighting Knights program from scratch and leading them into Sunshine State Conference competition for the 2014 season. After losing the first quarter, the Glenelg Country School boys basketball team won the next two and had a seven-point lead heading into the fourth. Then host Maret (D.C.) woke up and went on a 20-2 run to beat the Dragons, 58-47, at the Butch McAdams Event on Saturday. Warren Powers had a game-high 23 points and Kevin Boyd added 14 for Glenelg Country (8-7). The Fighting Frogs (10-2) had a trio of double-digit scorers: Marion Beck (15), Steffen Davis (14) and Drake Goddard (10).

The Mount Mat Madness Tournament, which returned to UMBC on Friday after a one-year absence, could have a Baltimore-area team champion for the first time since McDonogh won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008. Archbishop Spalding and Glenelg High sit tied atop the standings with 52 points after the first day of a tournament that features teams from four state. Wyoming Seminary, of Pennsylvania, captured the championship from 2009-2011. Archbishop Spalding advanced eight wrestlers, tying Reservoir for the most, into Saturday's quarterfinals of the 26-team, two-day tournament.

Glenelg guard Emily Russo scored her 1,000th career point earlier this month, and that will stand as the highlight of her basketball season because the 2011-12 All-Metro first-team selection suffered a season-ending knee injury - a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus - in a game against Mount Hebron on Dec. 17. She has scheduled surgery for Friday and will miss lacrosse season, too. A three-sport standout, Russo was also an All-Metro...
