— Even though his team was winning, Glenelg junior Glenn Lucas said there was a nervousness in the air as he took the mat for his 189-pound match against Winters Mill in the finals of the Class 2A-1A state dual meet wrestling championships Saturday evening at Linganore High School. "Every match we were nervous," said Lucas. "We weren't assuming anything until it was all over. " This was the Gladiators' third visit to the finals in the past four years, and after coming up short the first two times, they won this one, 35-25.

Oh, the letdown after a big win.No. 2 Hammond knew the feeling in last night's 60-40 victory over No. 19 Glenelg. The final score makes the game look like a rout. It was anything but. With three minutes to go, host Glenelg only trailed by eight. But the Gladiators hit a cold snap, missing their last seven shots while the Golden Bears hit their last five and added a couple of free throws."We were happy to pull this one out at the end," said Hammond guard Kacy Williams, who finished with 11 points, five rebounds, seven steals and three assists.

A keynote for Glenelg's boys basketball team this season is an uptempo style of play.Take yesterday's 75-59 victory over visiting Hammond. For three-quarters of the game, Glenelg employed a full-court press and ran the Golden Bears silly, as forward Jason Beall and guards Scott Cline and Jamie Brinker scored, forced steals and created plays with slick ball-handling and passing.Ahead from start to finish, the Gladiators were paced in points by seniors Beall (24), Cline (17), Brinker (11) and junior forward Brian Meshkin (11)

You don't have to try hard to convince Glenelg boys basketball coach Terry Coleman that there is no place like home.Coleman's upstart Gladiators, with only one loss at home all season, received balanced scoring from all five starters last night as the hosts sent perennial county champion Oakland Mills to its second loss in two days, 56-37.Glenelg (14-5, 8-4) might control its destiny in the three-way battle with Hammond and Centennial for the county basketball title."We've sold our kids on the fact that they don't have to worry about anybody else," said Coleman, whose team closes the regular season next Thursday against Centennial.

Glenelg coach Chuck Struhar believes a team must keep Atholton shortstop Chrissy Gavin off the bases if it is to have any chance of beating the Raiders. And he has the statistics to prove it.After going 0-for-3 in an early-season loss to the Gladiators, Gavin went 5-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored to lead the visiting and sixth-ranked Raiders to a 13-3 rout of No. 5 Glenelg yesterday. The victory moved Atholton (14-2, 9-2) into a second-place tie with Glenelg (1-3, 9-2) in Howard County and avenged last month's 9-1 loss.
