L. Glen Rock, founder of an insurance company and an avid sailor who loved being on the Chesapeake Bay, died of pancreatic cancer Monday at his home in Timonium. He was 79. Born in Cleveland, Mr. Rock was raised in Baltimore and graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 1944. He enlisted in the Army that year and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in July 1946, said his son, Lee Rock of Cockeysville. After his discharge, he continued his education at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where he graduated in 1950.

Summer Britcher, the Baltimore-born teenager, finished in 15th place in the women's singles luge event as her American teammate made history. Britcher, 19, ended with a time of 3 minutes, 24.143 seconds after her four runs, which was 4.38 seconds behind gold medal winner Natalie Geisenberger of Germany (3:19.768). The United States' Erin Hamlin, meanwhile, won the bronze after finishing in a time of 3:21.145, becoming the first American singles luger to ever medal at the Olympics.

It seems an odd idea: a festival in honor of a fantastical being. But it's more than that. The annual "May Day Fairie Festival" in Glen Rock, Pa., this weekend is really a celebration of spring's abundance and the coming summer bounty. And what better theme to represent nature's yield than the "Fairie," a spirit of the natural world? Visitors to the festival can watch performances by magicians, musicians and dancers, see the Bread and Puppet Theater, participate in maypole dancing along with bagpipe music, and browse an array of handmade arts and crafts.

The world's best banjo player of the past year lives in a log cabin about 40 miles from Baltimore. On a recent Wednesday afternoon, 55-year-old Mike Munford sat on a couch in his living room in Glen Rock, Pa. He held his favorite banjo, a Gibson five-string, as his Labrador-mix Miki rested her head by his side. Then Munford began to play, first goofing around a bit to fill the silence, and then playing a combination of more complicated riffs he'd written. He even mixed in "Carol of the Bells.

Barbara Edsall gently eased her Honda Civic down the hill to the intersection of Main Street and Baltimore Street. The stoplight was red. "Randy always talks about being a country bumpkin from a town that has one signal light," Barbara Edsall said as she sat waiting for the light to change. . "This is the one signal light. " The intersection is at the center of what was once a rural, agricultural and factory town of about 1,800 but seems now, more than three decades after Randy Edsall left to become its first Division I scholarship athlete in memory, part of the suburban sprawl between Baltimore and Harrisburg.

Mrs. Thomas was born on June 17, 1936 in Baltimore County, Maryland, a daughter of the late Joseph and Thelma Perry. She leaves daughter, Valeria D. Magenta of Baltimore, a sister Dee Longo of Hollywood, FL, and a companion James J. Feeley, of Glen Rock. Benjamin W. "Ben" Cumming III, who had worked as a heating and air conditioning installer, died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia at his Glen Rock, Pa., home. He was 45. The son of an Air Force officer and a dental assistant, Mr. Cumming was born in Aurora, Colo., and moved with his family to Kingsville in 1967. He was a 1983 graduate of Perry Hall High School and began working as a heating and air conditioning installer. He had worked for Ridge Heating and Air Conditioning as a teenager and later for Martin J. Braun before starting his own heating and air conditioning business.

Rob Ambrose has spent the past few days on the road recruiting, so the Towson University football coach hasn't read or heard much of what has been said about the hiring of Randy Edsall at Maryland. What Ambrose believes, from the eight years he spent on Edsall's staff at Connecticut, is that the Terps have someone who can build on the success achieved by former coach Ralph Friedgen during his 10 seasons in College Park. Wendy Schagen Klag, a volunteer and devoted parent admired for her gentle way with children, died of a seizure disorder Wednesday while on vacation with her family aboard a cruise ship near the Galapagos Islands. She was 54 and lived in Parkville. Wendy Jane Schagen was born in Paterson, N.J., and raised in nearby Glen Rock. She graduated from Juniata College in Huntington, Pa., where she studied sociology and education and met her future husband, Michael J. Klag. The two married in 1975.
