Chachi Kelehan's open-net goal with 38 seconds left to play gave the Mount Hebron girls lacrosse team the cushion it needed to hold off Glenelg, 8-6, in a game played at Cedar Lane Park. Kelehan got the shot when Glenelg goalkeeper Megan Taylor (15 saves) came out of the goal circle to double-team on defense. Jen Giles put No. 6 Mount Hebron on the scoreboard six seconds after the game began. "That startled us for a second," Taylor said. Giles quickly added a second score, but the Vikings were never able to get more than a two-goal advantage.

A 15-year-old student at Glen Burnie High who police say went to the school Tuesday with a loaded .22-caliber handgun was arrested and charged as a juvenile with a weapons violation. Officials credited three staff members at the school with detaining the student and discovering the gun in a book bag. "I don't think it's possible to overstate the importance that an alert school secretary and two assistant principals — who didn't take simple answers that weren't adding up at face value — played in preventing what could have been a disastrous situation," said Bob Mosier, a spokesman for Anne Arundel public schools.
