It has been a season in which both original captains have missed significant playing time - quarterback Brian Madden because of a two-game suspension and linebacker Jake Bowen because of a foot injury. It has been a season in which the Naval Academy was totally embarrassed at home by Georgia Tech, 70-7 - the worst defeat in the program's storied history. It has been a season in which the Midshipmen have improved during their last three games, only to be undone by untimely mistakes - both mental and physical - including penalties; an inability to prosper in the red zone, and a lack of big plays by the defense.

Q: Who made my 8 1/2 -inch diameter "Peacock at the Urn" carnival-glass bowl? When it's held to the light, the center becomes a deep cobalt blue and the sides are iridescent. How much would a collector pay for it?A: Your bowl by Fenton Art Glass Co., of Williamstown, W.Va., was made circa 1910 to 1920 and could bring around $125 to $150 at auction in good condition, according to carnival-glass expert LaVeta Woody, of Woody Auction Co., P.O. Box 618, Douglass, Kan. 67039, (316) 746-2694. Its strong color makes it desirable, she explained.

Ann Mitchell of Pittsfield, Mass., was looking for a recipe for a lemon cake similar to the one that someone brought to a party some years ago. It was made with pieces of angel food cake, lemon pudding and whipped cream layered in a springform pan and chilled. Helen Kimpel, also from Pittsfield, thought she had the recipe. She found it in a magazine a long time ago and it continues to be the dessert most asked for in her family.

Around the house* Clean a stained teapot. Fill with water and 1/4 cup bleach; let sit; rinse thoroughly before using.* Use an old blender with a glass bowl to mix latex paint thoroughly. When finished, clean glass container with hot water and a small amount of dish detergent and whisk clean by turning on the appliance.* Loosen a rusted bolt easily. Pour a few drops of carbonated soft drink onto the rusted nail or bolt. The acid in the soda will break up some of the rust.* Clean walls with a solution of 1-quart warm water and 2 tablespoons vinegar.

The fragrances of early summer - rose, jasmine, honeysuckle, lavender - are pure romance. And lemon verbena, that wonderfully aromatic herb, may be the most romantic of them all. Its captivating perfume is delicate; its flavor, mingling floral and fruit notes, pure magic. Although lemon verbena is widely known, it's elusive. Few chefs and fewer home cooks have used it in cooking, probably because it is an infusing herb rather than a finishing herb such as basil, chervil or dill. Our recipe for poached apricots and cherries in a lemon verbena-infused wine syrup is easy to prepare and makes a memorable dessert.
