The Crofton Hot Shots, the under-14 girls soccer team that was suspended from a Washington-area league when the players' parents were accused of threatening a referee, are back in the game. Whether they make it onto the field, though, is unclear. The team might have earned a commutation of sorts this week, when the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association's disciplinary committee ordered the Hot Shots be "immediately reinstated," albeit on probation and on the condition that the fans take sportsmanship classes.

FIGURE ON some kind of soccer being played this coming spring at the new Covenant Park, but just not as much as the new facility's owners were hoping and planning for - initially, anyway. The Soccer Association of Columbia/Howard County reluctantly decided last week to put off sodding most of the eight fields it has under construction there, as well as three at Howard Community College, until winter weather begins to break, we hope, in early March. Reason? No guesswork needed here. The ground is just too saturated for heavy equipment to be used, as has been the case for too many days and even weeks since work began in late May on the complex off Centennial Lane, opposite Centennial Park.

Atholton's talented soccer player, Kate Nicholson, must have a problem keeping all her uniforms straight. It's a good problem for the sophomore who recently was named to a national team. The striker, who led Atholton to its first regional title last fall, is now a member of the U-15 United Soccer League national team. She's one of 19 girls selected nationwide. Nicholson played for the Baltimore Bays team last summer. From there she was selected for the Mid-Atlantic Region team, and later she was tabbed for the national team.

REFEREES make good calls and bad ones, because they're human. Anyone's free to complain about a bad call, but no one has the right to take his or her disagreements to the level of threats or assaults. When those things happen, sports league organizers ought to take swift and stiff action. So the decision to suspend the Hot Shots - a Crofton girls' soccer team - for a season made sense. According to a 16-year-old referee, the team's parents threatened her (even saying they'd come to her house)
