No. 5 John Carroll took its first step toward a threepeat of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association AConference boys basketball championship. The two-time defending Patriots (25-10) got production out of their bigs early in the game and hung on to beat visiting Calvert Hall, 64-53, in Wednesday night's quarterfinal. Six players scored, including 10 points by the forwards in the paint, and John Carroll took a 24-7 lead after the first quarter and a 34-13 lead at the break.

Emmanuel Toney came up with the game-saving play for No. 15 Annapolis Area Christian School in boys basketball Wednesday night. With AACS trailing host Gilman 54-52 with 25 seconds left, Toney stole the ball and passed it downcourt to Taylor Leabhart, who converted a three-point play, scoring the layup and making the foul shot, to secure a 55-54 victory. Toney finished with eight points. The Eagles improved to 14-6 (13-4 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference)

When Gilman's Shane Cockerille and Calvert Hall's Delando Johnson sign their national letters of intent to accept football scholarships Wednesday morning, they won't be at school. They'll be 1,300 miles away in Austin, Texas. Instead of signing beside their high school teammates, the rivals will join some of the nation's other top high school seniors who are also playing in Tuesday night's fourth annual International Bowl. Cockerille, headed to Maryland, and Johnson, headed for Toledo, plan to sign at the 2013 National Signing Day Breakfast in Austin on the first day of the signing period for football, soccer and several other sports.

This night belonged to McDonogh. McDonogh's top-ranked girls cruised to victory in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship meet Friday night. The No. 1 McDonogh boys completed the school's sweep of the private school title meets with their win in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association competition at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. This was McDonogh's first championship sweep since 2010, and the girls now have won five straight titles.

Several top programs from around the country will be in Baltimore this weekend for the Gilman Duals wrestling tournament. The meet, which will take place Saturday at the school, also features local teams No. 1 McDonogh and No. 4 Archbishop Spalding -- in addition to the host Greyhounds. Notable schools from out of the area in the one-day event include: Wyoming Seminary (Pa.), Germantown Academy (Pa.), St. Christopher's (Va.), St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.) and Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.)

John Morgan "Nemo" Robinson, a retired operator of a Chesapeake Bay summer resort and decorated World War II veteran, died Saturday of a heart attack at Anne Arundel Medical Center after undergoing brain surgery a week earlier. The Severna Park resident was 90. Born and raised in Catonsville, he was a 1938 graduate of Catonsville High School and spent another year at Polytechnic Institute. He gained the nickname Nemo as a child because he had long blond curls like a lion in the "Little Nemo" comic strip.

Although Gilman teammates Henry Poggi and Micah Kiser, The Baltimore Sun's Co-Defensive Players of the Year, will play in different national all-star football games Friday night, local football fans won't need a split-screen television to watch both. Poggi, a 6-foot-4, 258-pound defensive tackle who is committed to Michigan, will play for the White team in the Under Armour All-America Game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The 5 p.m. game will be televised live on ESPN. Across the country, Kiser, a 6-2, 227-pound linebacker who is headed for Virginia, will play for the East squad in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Butler is the first women's player at Goucher to score 30 points since Shadae Swan (St. Frances) in 2007. - Both Baltimore and Washington had plenty of scoring chances in the fifth annual Crab Bowl. The difference is what they did with them. Stephen Scott (Poly), Garrett Bean (Westminster) and Michael Anderson (Howard) all ran for touchdowns, and Harford Tech's Isaiah Gills caught a long touchdown pass that helped Baltimore to a 28-7 victory over Washington in the senior all-star game played at the Marvin F. Wilson Stadium at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. Baltimore kept making big plays at the right time throughout the contest, while Washington couldn't come through.
