Gilman junior Joe Smeton drove in three runs on two hits and pitched a solid 51/3innings to lead the No. 5 Greyhounds to a 9-4 victory over No. 1 Calvert Hall in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference baseball game Tuesday. Smeton gave up two earned runs on seven hits to improve his record to 3-0. He walked two and struck out two. Gilman (13-4 overall, 6-1 league) took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with three runs as Smeton had a two-run single to make it 5-2. The host Greyhounds buried the Cardinals (9-5, 5-1)

Gilman's formula for success over the past several seasons in track and field involves using a number of talented athletes who can score points in a variety of events. Peter Merritt is a model of that formula. At the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship meet, the senior anchored the winning 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams. He also won the high jump and the 800. All in all, he helped Gilman score 40 points as the Greyhounds rolled to a fourth straight team title.

After leading the Baltimore Bays Chelsea under-18/18 club to a 3-0 mark at the U.S. Soccer Develpment Academy playoffs last week, goalie Andrew Harris (Gilman) and striker Mike Gamble (McDonogh) were named to Top Drawer Soccer's Best XI for the tournament. In winning Group 8 and advancing to the Finals Week, set for July 16-23 in Houston, Harris finished with a 0.66 goals against and Gamble scored two goals in the three wins. Both players will play at Wake Forest in the fall.

Matt Tilley said that his goal Saturday was to have a little fun. Unfortunately for visiting Mount St. Joseph, it turned out to be anything but fun. Tilley hit a two-run homer on a 2-0 pitch to cap a four-run seventh inning comeback for Gilman and give the Greyhounds a 9-8 victory over Mount St. Joseph in the semifinals of the President's Cup at Johns Hopkins. The Greyhounds (13-5) advance to Saturday's championship game to face Archbishop Curley (6-3) at 1 p.m. at Camden Yards.

A trio of veterans propelled the Gilman basketball team Sunday to the program's third Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship. Seniors Cyrus Jones and Ryan Ripken and junior Ben Grace all took turns stepping up at opportune times, helping the Greyhounds to a 69-62 win over St. Vincent Pallotti at UMBC's RAC Arena. Jones scored a game-high 22 points, Ripken added 21 and Grace finished with 17 to help make sure the Greyhounds stayed a step ahead of Pallotti throughout the game.

Gilman sophomore wide receiver Kai Locksley tweeted his confidence before the Greyhounds took on Don Bosco Prep on Saturday night: “Got last years number 1 team in the nation don bosco prep! At navys field let's get it! Time to end their 48game win streak!” Former Greyhound Darius Jennings tweeted his encouragement: “still #4 at heart. Good luck tonight boys.” Then, the No. 1 Greyhounds set the Twitter-verse aflutter with a 13-6 victory over the New Jersey powerhouse, ending what was actually a 46-game win streak.

Two defending champions from the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association will participate in the inaugural Under Armour Brothers In Arms Classic high school football event this fall. Gilman, which has won the past two MIAA A Conference championships, is scheduled to play Manatee (Fla.) on Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the University of Maryland's Byrd Stadium. In the first game that day, two-time defending MIAA C Conference champion St. Frances -- which is moving to the A Conference this fall -- is set to face Friendship (D.C.)

The senior captain capped his four-year varsity career with four victories at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association track and field championships. He ran the anchor leg of the 3,200-meter relay team, which set a conference record, was the best time in the state this year and was fifth fastest in the country (7:42.61). He also anchored the winning 1,600 relay (3:23.42) and won the 800 (1:55.80) and the high jump (6 feet, 1 inch). The performance helped Gilman to its fourth consecutive undefeated season and MIAA title.

Gilman's 13-6 win Saturday over New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep boosted the Greyhounds to No. 2 in this week's media Maryland High School Football State Poll released Tuesday. The Greyhounds had fallen to No. 4 after opening the season 0-2, but jumped over Quince Orchard and Calvert Hall to reclaim the No. 2 spot behind Good Counsel. Calvert Hall dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 after losing to DeMatha, 23-14. Quince Orchard is No. 3 with DeMatha up one spot to No. 4. The only other local teams besides Gilman to move up were Westminster and Arundel.

Alexander Armstrong, a former Gilman School English teacher who inspired generations of students with his light-hearted approach to literature and drama and was known for fiendishly elaborate practical jokes, died of an aneurysm Sunday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Ruxton resident was 89. Mr. Armstrong was born in Hagerstown and raised in Baltimore on Biddle and Eager streets. He was the son of Alexander Armstrong III, a banker, attorney and former Maryland attorney general who died in 1939.
