The headmaster of Gilman School has abruptly stepped down after it was discovered that he falsely claimed membership on a university hockey team on his resume and in discussions with school officials before his hiring. Jon C. McGill, who has served as headmaster since 2001, resigned from the private all-boys school in Baltimore last week after an annual evaluation revealed the false claim, according to separate statements released Friday by McGill and the school's board of trustees. "It came to light that there were misrepresentations on his resume and in his early discussions with Gilman having to do with his intercollegiate athletic participation," Charles C. Fenwick Jr., president of the board, wrote in a statement that was posted on the school's Web site.

Delores E. Dorsey, a retired high school guidance counselor who earlier had been a foreign language teacher, died of pancreatic cancer Monday at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The longtime Pikesville resident was 71. The former Delores Elizabeth Alston was born in Littleton, N.C., and moved with her family to East Baltimore as a young child. She was a 1953 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and attended what is now Morgan State University, where she majored in French and Spanish. After earning her bachelor's degree in 1957, she traveled to Belgium, where she worked as a guide at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels.

On April 11, 2007, Dawson L. Jr., beloved husband of Patricia Farber (nee) Stokes and devoted father of Dawson lll, Peter, Michael, Lorinda, Mark and Jonathan. Also survived by fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 3, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gilman School. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Farber Family Scholarship Fund at Gilman School or to a charity of one's choice.

Dawson L. Farber Jr., a retired National Brewing Co. executive and a decorated World War II veteran, died of pneumonia Wednesday at his Brewster, Mass. home. The former Towson resident was 90. Born in Pierce, W.Va., he was raised in Sparrows Point, where his father practiced medicine. He graduated in 1935 from the Gilman School, where he played varsity football and was captain of the baseball and basketball teams. He earned a degree in history at Princeton University and played on the baseball team.

Anna Naomi Sheppard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sheppard of Bygrave, Hertfordshire, England was wed to Matthew Archbold Bartlett, son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bartlett, III of Baltimore on August 12, 2006. The bride graduated from The Perse School for Girls, Cambridge and Regents Park College, Oxford University. She has a post-graduate diploma in Law from City University, London and a post-graduate diploma in EC Competition from Kings College, London. She previously worked as a commercial lawyer for Eversheds LLP in London.

William Beverly Campbell, a former Gilman School teacher, administrator and coach, died of a heart attack Sunday while playing tennis near his home in Sunriver, Ore. The former Roland Park resident was 72. Born in Baltimore and raised in Towson, he was the son of Bruce Spotswood Campbell and Virginia MacLean Tyler Campbell, owners of the Harry T. Campbell materials supply quarry in Baltimore County. A 1952 Gilman School graduate, Mr. Campbell earned a bachelor's degree in economics at Princeton University, where he was a four-year All-American lacrosse goalie.

Partnership proves helpful to learning While debate swirls as to whether public or private schools are more successful, reporter Sara Neufeld's article about the new initiative known as "Middle Grades Partnership" (MGP) offers us some practical insights into what really works for teaching and learning ("Pairings put a purpose in kids' summer," July 24). Many of us who work in private schools know we have an obligation to our city and to the community and do not place ourselves in opposition to public education.

Carter of Baltimore, Maryland were married on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at the Westin St. John Resort and Villas in the United States Virgin Islands. The bride and groom met in New York City when both worked at the Ford Foundation. The bride is a doctoral candidate in Government at the University of Texas. She graduated from Oberlin College and received a Master's degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.

He was 13, a tenacious kid with an athlete's build and a chip on his shoulder. A lacrosse coach at St. Ignatius Loyola liked the fire in the youngster's belly but wondered about his attitude. The coach asked around and got an answer. Two years earlier, the boy had witnessed the drive-by shootings of his father and uncle. Both men died. "That [incident] showed me how tough and resilient a lot of these children are," said Damien Davis, the coach. It's kids like that whom Davis wants to reach.

William J. McCarthy, former managing partner of one of Baltimore's top law firms who held prominent roles in Baltimore banking and as chairman of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, died of an embolism Friday after knee surgery at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 75. A Baltimore native, Mr. McCarthy was a 1949 graduate of Gilman School, where he played football and wrestled. While attending Dartmouth College, in Hanover, N.H., he founded the school's rugby club. He graduated in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in English.
