ROCKVILLE - Loyola junior defensive back Van Brooks was listed in critical condition last night at Maryland Shock Trauma Center after being injured yesterday in the Dons' 30-3 victory at Georgetown Prep. Brooks was injured making a tackle as his head collided with the leg of a running back. He appeared to be motionless for about 25 minutes before being carried by stretcher into an ambulance. "[Brooks] told me he couldn't move any part of his body," said junior linebacker Tony Hamlett, who stood near Brooks shortly after the collision.

Six football programs from the Washington area's Interstate Athletic Conference could merge with those in the A and B conferences of Baltimore's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association if a plan is approved by MIAA administrators next month. Rick Diggs, director of the MIAA, said representatives from both organizations have spent seven months discussing the proposal, whose target date is the fall of 2005. "As of now, all six of their athletic directors and football coaches seem to be in favor of doing this," Diggs said.

ROCKVILLE - An extra team van carrying Grant Zimmerman and some Gilman teammates arrived nearly 30 minutes after the time the game was supposed to begin. The late arrival delayed the start of the game, but after a cold start, Zimmerman got hot and closed the show. The senior All-Metro goalie made 10 of his 14 saves in the second half and watched defensive midfielder Zach Goldberg go offensive with three goals in yesterday's come-from-behind, 7-6 victory over Georgetown Prep. Gilman's second consecutive road win raised its record to 7-0, and ended an eight-game winning streak by the defending Interstate Athletic Conference- champion Little Hoyas (8-2)

ROCKVILLE - Ben Rubeor and Andrew Baird watched from the stands at Loyola High last fall as Georgetown Prep's Nick Veith scored three touchdowns in a football victory that gave him bragging rights in the rivalry between the schools. The two Loyola seniors do not play football, but they do play a mean game of lacrosse. And it was in that sport that the All-Metro attackmen gained a measure of revenge yesterday, combining for nine points in a 12-5 rout of Georgetown Prep and its Veith-led defense.

NORTH BETHESDA - For Marissa McPhail, the Georgetown Prep Classic was a reaffirmation. For Tristram Thomas, the cross country meet was a revival. McPhail, a sophomore from Arundel, earned her second consecutive win in a major invitational, while Thomas, a junior from McDonogh, ignored a nagging injury to cruise to victory over the 3.1-mile course at Georgetown Prep yesterday. The No. 4 Severna Park girls squad was the only Baltimore area team to capture a crown. Thomas collected his gold medal in the Division I race, in which he took a lead after the first half-mile that he would not relinquish.

Nick Veith rushed for 72 yards and three touchdowns and Rice Moss caught two touchdown passes to lead visiting Georgetown Prep to a 45-27 rout of No. 8 Loyola yesterday. Quarterback Nic Aldrich had 170 passing yards for the Little Hoyas (2-1), whose 28-point second quarter turned an early 7-0 deficit into a 31-14 halftime lead. Georgetown Prep's offensive line pushed around a Loyola defense that had allowed only 13 points in its previous three games, including routs of Severn (28-0) and Frederick County power Urbana (24-6)

Moments after his Georgetown Prep team's 45-27 rout at eighth-ranked Loyola, Little Hoyas running back Nick Veith posed for pictures with Ben Rubeor, a Dons lacrosse player. "We've played lacrosse against each other since sixth grade, and we're pretty good friends, but I probably wouldn't have done that if we had lost," said Veith, a standout lacrosse defenseman who is committed to Johns Hopkins. "Whether it's Gilman, Loyola in lacrosse or football, games against Baltimore are huge and I play my hardest to come out winning."
