Everybody likes Gary Gensler. President Barack Obama nominated the Baltimore native in December to head an important federal agency that regulates commodities. Mr. Gensler's nomination cleared the Senate Agriculture Committee. He is supported by industry groups such as the Futures Industry Association and consumer groups like Public Citizen - no mean feat. So, if everyone likes him, why isn't Gary Gensler leading the Commodity Futures Trading Commission? Because a single U.S. senator, Bernard Sanders of Vermont, objects to the nomination.

WASHINGTON - Signaling his intention to strengthen regulation of the nation's financial markets, President-elect Barack Obama announced his choice yesterday of two government veterans, including Baltimore native Gary Gensler, to lead what could be a sweeping overhaul. "If the financial crisis has taught us anything, it's that this failure of oversight and accountability doesn't just harm individuals involved. It has the potential to devastate our entire economy," Obama said in Chicago, where he unveiled his choice of Mary Schapiro as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and Gensler to head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

He was off to a meeting with the Senate's top Democratic leaders, where he was to help plot their strategy on pension reform and other economic items. There was a fund-raiser coming up at his multimillion-dollar Baltimore County home for state Sen. Christopher Van Hollen Jr., a Democrat who's trying to unseat Rep. Constance A. Morella in Montgomery County - just a "small get-together" featuring House Minority Leader Richard A. Gephardt.
