"He's never seen hair like yours before. That color is called blonde, Daniel, and it's nothing but trouble. " -- Pastor Moses It's nice when a show spells out the theme of an episode right in the title, as "The Newsroom" did this week with "Unintended Consequences. " In the fourth episode of Season Two of the HBO series, we followed developments in the legal case surrounding the Genoa story, and saw more of the series of events that led our cast of characters into the lion's den. We opened in the present day, which in this world is 2012, with Maggie facing the ACN legal team.

As you enter the "Bernardo Strozzi" exhibit at the Walters Art Gallery, you're confronted by one of the Italian baroque master's most fascinating paintings, his "Madonna and Child with St. John" of 1621-1622.This is no sweet-faced mother gazing fondly at the infant she holds. This madonna, seated with a barefoot up on her sewing basket and her head resting informally on her right hand, lifts her eyes from the book she's reading to look straight out at us. Here's a practical-looking, no-nonsense sort of woman, a person we can easily imagine chatting with.

I don't do lost-cat stories, but today I'll make an exception because Genoa Flotsam Ebbcat presents possible proof of that nine-lives business. This brown-and-gray tabby, pet of sailboat dwellers Mike Province and Anne Andrews, apparently survived a fast 12-mile trip atop the ski-racked roof of a Jeep Cherokee from Annapolis to Baltimore-Washington International Airport. It jumped Jeep near the BWI train station. Genoa's keepers believe she's alive, and they're looking for her. This happened Tuesday.

MANY AMERICANS may be wondering what led to the massive demonstrations at the economic summit in Genoa, Italy. The answer: The protesters are convinced that the managers of globalization are taking our world in the wrong direction. As President Jacques Chirac of France noted during the summit, "One hundred thousand people don't get upset unless there is a problem in their hearts and spirits." Trade unionists, environmentalists, human-rights advocates, AIDS activists and proponents of Third World debt cancellation fear that corporate globalization is leading to greater inequality, increasing job insecurity, the destruction of our environment and, perhaps most frighteningly, the weakening of our democracies.

NO GREATER TRIBUTE to globalization can be found than the demonstrations against it that are turning Genoa into an armed camp during the Group of Eight meetings. Protesters organized on the Internet. They coordinate on the street by cell phone. They arrived by cheap air fare. They themselves are post-national, transcending former barriers of language and culture. Their new uniform of white overalls and a plastic helmet is affordable thanks to Third World manufacture for global markets.

SAN DIEGO -- To a lot of people, sailboat racing is a curious pastime, a tipsy business of pulling on ropes while trying to use the wind to your advantage. So, it probably is not surprising that the language of sailing also is a foreign tongue to the masses. The following is, after a fashion, a definition of America's Cup terms:Boat -- Each team has one it may use during this series of races. The Italian boat is red, the American boat is white. Each is roughly 75 feet long and costs $5 million.
