Colleges Terps get ex-Princeton standout Chanenchuk All-America midfielder Mike Chanenchuk and long-pole midfielder Taylor Morgan have transferred to play lacrosse for Maryland this season. Chanenchuk, of Poquott, N.Y., was a second-team USILA All-American at Princeton in 2010 and the unanimous 2010 Ivy League Rookie of the Year after scoring 28 goals and adding eight assists. He didn't play for the Tigers last spring. Morgan, a Potomac native who helped lead Georgetown Prep to state titles in 2009 and 2010, missed the 2011 season at Syracuse because of illness.

LAUREL -- Laurel Race Course offers two stakes events on an 11-race program today -- one for the tried and true, and one for horses seeking that exalted level.First is the $75,000 Goss L. Stryker Stakes for Maryland-bred 3-year-olds. Two races later, experienced sprinters battle in the Northern Wolf Handicap.Forry Cow How, Gala Spinaway and Haymaker are top contenders in the Stryker. They were the one-two-three finishers in the Star de Naskra Stakes in a previous meeting.The $50,000-added Northern Wolf makes its debut today.

Speakerphone, with Clarence Ladner aboard, stalked Rainbow Prospect down the back stretch, took the lead on the turn and pulled away through the home stretch to win the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes yesterday at Pimlico Race Course.The three-year-old son of Fappiano out of Hat Brim by In Reality covered the six furlongs in 1 minute, 10 1/5 seconds. Coin Collector, coming on with a rush in the stretch, finished second and Golden Phase was third."He broke good, laid up close and moved up near the lead on the backside, so I let him go to the lead on the turn," said Ladner.

ELMONT, N.Y. -- West By West, a newcomer to the American Championship Racing Series, held off a late surge from Maryland-owned and Maryland-trained Valley Crossing and won TTC the $400,000 Nassau County Handicap yesterday at Belmont Park.Pimlico Special winner Devil His Due finished fourth as the 9-5 favorite, a half-length behind 1991 Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold, who made his customary late run but finished third.Devil His Due, current ACRS point leader, carried high weight of 123 pounds, giving the winner 9 pounds.

LAUREL -- Absolutely Great gave a hint of greatness when winning yesterday's allowance feature at Laurel Race Course by 12 1/2 lengths.Ridden by Mike Luzzi, the filly led all the way when making her first start for trainer Eddie Gaudet after a six-race career in New York. The filly received the bleeder medication Lasix yesterday for the first time; the diuretic is banned in New York.The victory was the first for Luzzi since he won the $350,000 Brooklyn Handicap at Aqueduct on Saturday aboard Timely Warning.
