Clarence "Jo Jo" Ladner barely cracks the top 10 among the state's winningest jockeys. But his cadre of live stakes mounts -- Chip's Dancer, Broad Gains and the stable of well-bred horses owned by Israel Cohen and trained by Dean Gaudet -- have made him a power this year in added-money races.Yesterday he scored his fourth stakes win of 1993 when he won the Primonetta Handicap at Pimlico Race Course on the Cohen-owned Mixed Appeal. The hard-knocking mare has been stakes-placed on numerous occasions, but had never actually won an added-money race until she collared Singing Ring near the eighth pole yesterday and drew off to 1 3/4 -length victory.

DURHAM, N.C. - As the image of each coach flashed on the huge screen high above the Georgia Dome during this year's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, there was a smattering of applause as a short public service announcement was made. When Mike Krzyzewski's face appeared and the Duke coach started speaking, the crowd seemed to pay more attention. His words were drowned out by a chorus of boos. Such is the price of fame these days. The Blue Devils have been college basketball's most successful program over the last 15 years and the 54-year-old Krzyzewski has been its transcendent figure.

In the first week of her reporting internship for a horse-racing newspaper, Gabby Gaudet nervously approached one of the most celebrated figures in the sport. "Can you tell me how you first got involved in the game?" she asked Kelly Breen, who trained the winner of the 2011 Belmont Stakes. "Terrible question. Get back to me when you think of a better one," he replied.  She flinched but thought fast. "How about if I ride your horse?" she asked. He said yes, they fell to talking, and the story she wrote ran above the fold in The Saratoga Special.

In recent years, the Gaudet family watched a succession of their friends in the horse-racing business leave Maryland for the lure of larger fields and heftier purses in other states. But Linda Gaudet, the Prince George's County-based co-owner of Concealed Identity — which finished 10th in the Preakness — and her relatives remained tied to the state out of affection, habit and family connections. So running a horse in the Preakness seemed like a reward, even though Concealed Identity didn't challenge at the end. "Nothing bad about it," said Lacey Gaudet, an assistant trainer who is Linda's daughter.

Colleges UMBC men fall in conference quarters UMBC (7-8-3) was unable to defend its America East men's soccer title, as the fourth-seeded Retrievers fell, 1-0, to visiting fifth-seed Hartford (7-8-4) in a quarterfinal Saturday night. The Hawks advance to play top-seeded Boston University in the league semifinals on the road on Wednesday. Hartford scored in the 69th minute. Defender Atobra Ampadu won a battle for the ball on the right wing and sprinted into the box. He hit a short cross, where a streaking Anthony Santaga redirected it from six yards away past diving goalkeeper Dan Louisignau and into the near-right portion of the goal.

On the wall of Eddie Gaudet's office is a photo of him as a jockey sitting atop a winner in Florida in the 1950s. Tucked in among dozens of snapshots and 8-by-10s spread over three walls, is another from 1966 showing Gaudet as the winning trainer at Bowie Race Track. "He's the dark-haired one," Linda Gaudet said, pointing to the photos of her husband. "He was the Dean Martin type. " "They used to call me Dean Martin," Gaudet, 81, said, his eyes twinkling from under a baseball cap. The walls are an historic collage that will be adding more photos in the new year as the longtime Maryland horse trainer hands off his business to his wife and 23-year-old daughter Lacey.
