Reading Time: Two Minutes.Maryland coach Mark Duffner should moonlight delivering inspirational messages on small radio stations throughout the South. His remarks during the weekly ACC coaches teleconference are so uplifting. For instance, he was "very happy and pleased" the Terps beat West Virginia and he views the game and the first half of the Florida State game "as a shot in the arm" as the team prepares for Wake Forest this week. But the Terps are not overconfident: "We realize we have to build on the effort last week and have to get some things squared away and continue to improve."

One of the first questions police officers asked Denise Cherry when they came to help her distraught husband was if there were any guns inside the couple's Hamilton apartment. No, she said emphatically. But she forgot about the 16-gauge shotgun tucked in the back of the bedroom closet -- a gift of more than a decade ago.Police said Baron Michael Cherry, a 41-year-old mentally disturbed man who frustrated his wife by refusing to take his medication, used the bolt-action shotgun to fatally shoot a veteran police lieutenant in the back Wednesday afternoon.

Call it the discipline wars. On one side stand no-nonsense parents, as firm as Patton, refusing to excuse misbehavior as child's play, and meting out punishment from an arsenal that includes grounding, curtailment of privileges, additional chores, even a good spanking. The traditionalists, as they like to call themselves, rail against parents such as Karen Gatewood of Bucks County, Pa., who has twin 3-year-old girls.Gatewood, 30, once spanked and called "time out." Now, she talks about her children's feelings.

The attorney for an 18-year-old man released on bail after being charged with first-degree murder said city prosecutors have twice failed to present the facts of the cases against his client to a judge. Most suspects charged with murder - and many of those facing gun charges in general - can expect to be held without bond pending trial. But Brandon Mitchell, a Morrell Park teen arrested this year on attempted murder and murder charges in a span of six months, has walked out of jail on bail multiple times . Attorney Howard Cardin said after Mitchell was arrested in July for attempted murder, prosecutors "refused" to provide facts about the case at a habeas corpus hearing, prompting Mitchell to get a bail of $50,000.
