A Baltimore man was killed in a shooting outside a nightclub in Baldwin, N.Y., early Saturday morning, local police said. Daquan Gaskin, 22, was shot in the chest in front of the Love Jones Café, at 1920 Grand Ave., and taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:17 a.m., Nassau County police said. A 39-year-old man, who was not identified, was shot in the leg in the incident, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released. Nassau County police have not identified a suspect or motive in the shooting.

Durrell Gaskins was on his way to work when he stepped into a group of about 30 people in a fight involving students at nearby Forest Park High School, his father said Thursday. Durant Gaskins said he watched as his son was stabbed to death. Gaskins said he and his 25-year-old son, who worked as a mixer at Elite Spice in Jessup, saw the commotion Wednesday afternoon on Belle Avenue near Garrison Boulevard. Durrell Gaskin ran over, then collapsed moments later as his father rushed to his side.

John T. Gaskins Jr., a longtime Baltimore City employee, died Saturday of a heart attack at his Northwest Baltimore home. He was 63.After working for the U.S. Postal Service for several years, he joined the Baltimore Department of Social Services. He joined the Baltimore City Health Department in 1962, and then the housing department. He was a housing inspector at his death.In 1947 he graduated from Douglass High School and in 1951 from Lincoln University, with a bachelor's degree in biology.

Sidna J. Gaskins, a retired school crossing guard, died of complications from a stroke Thursday at Ridgeway Manor Nursing Home. The Ashburton resident was 94. Born Sidna Elizabeth Pamilla Jones, she was raised in the 4600 block of Falls Road, then a historically black neighborhood known as Cross Keys. She was a 1927 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. In 1935, she married Howard Gaskins, a chauffeur and Crown Cork & Seal laborer. He died in 1980. To help support a growing family, Mrs. Gaskins took in laundry and helped her children sell snowballs and candy applies on her front porch.

Baltimore's director of human resources will step down in January, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Friday. Gladys B. Gaskins, who made a salary of $152,680, will be pursuing new opportunities, according to a statement from the mayor's office. Deputy director of human resources S. Yvonne Moore, who makes $82,228, will serve as interim director as City Hall searches for Gaskins' permanent replacement. "Director Gaskins has been an exceptional and committed public servant for the citizens of Baltimore and we are all very thankful for her many years of service," Rawlings-Blake said in a statement.

A convicted armed robber and drug dealer who received $42,000 in help from a state fund that assists crime victims failed to appear at a court hearing yesterday in Baltimore, prompting a warrant for his arrest. Deandra M. Gaskins, 31, of South Baltimore was scheduled to appear in Baltimore District Court on a charge of marijuana possession stemming from an arrest in February. The warrant, issued by Judge Charles A. Chiapparelli, was the third issued for Gaskins this month. Warrants also were issued after he failed to show up at a hearing on an alleged probation violation and at a trial on drug charges, court records show.
