KATHERINE PATRICIA GARY was a registered critical care nurse and mid-wife who died on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Ruxton resident was 67. Born in Crosshaven, County Cork, Ireland, the daughter of Molly and Patrick Thomas Meade. After earning her R.N. and midwifery credentials with honors, she moved to the U.S. in 1969 and served two years in New Rochelle Medical Center in New York as an R.N. obtaining additional training she moved to Baltimore and was a critical care nurse at the VA hospital in Loch Raven in 1972.

The success of John G. Gary, the candidate, depended upon his ability to rally the voters behind his conservative agenda last fall. The success of John G. Gary, the county executive, will depend, in part, upon his ability to rally the 18 men and women of the Anne Arundel County General Assembly delegation behind his ambitious legislative package.In this session, Mr. Gary will be seeking funding for a number of capital projects as well as fundamental changes in the powers of his office.He will request about $27 million from the General Assembly to fulfill his campaign promise to build a detention center in Glen Burnie.

Del. John G. Gary Jr. became the first official candidate for county executive yesterday, saying he would concentrate on fighting crime and improving the quality of education in the county's schools.Mr. Gary also vowed to continue the fiscally conservative legacy of Robert R. Neall, a longtime friend and political ally he hopes to succeed. Mr. Neall stood by Mr. Gary during his announcement yesterday morning at the Lowe House Office Building in Annapolis."We have to be ever-vigilant not to allow this county to return to the high tax, big government type of attitude that existed before Bob came into office," Mr. Gary said.

What does John G. Gary's proposed spending plan say about Anne Arundel's new county executive, a self-professed conservative?State Sen. John Astle, a Democrat, says the $733.2 million plan makes Mr. Gary look like a tax-and-spend liberal, even though it increases government spending at a rate lower than inflation.Council President Diane Evans, a fellow Republican, says the party's rank and file is not amused by some of Mr. Gary's proposals and fears some of the ideas are half-baked.Since Mr. Gary unveiled his proposals last week for the fiscal year that begins July 1, the executive has received high marks for crafting a "bare-bones" budget that holds the growth in spending to 2.5 percent.

Norma Howatt Gary, a homemaker and former longtime Glen Burnie resident, died in her sleep Jan. 2 at a nursing home in Las Vegas. She was 88. Born Norma Carter in Rock Hall, she was a 1930 graduate of Rock Hall High School and worked as a seamstress in a shirt factory. In 1934, she married Robert James Howatt, a merchant mariner who died in 1948. After her 1951 marriage to Everett C. Gary, a milkman, the couple settled in Glen Burnie. He died in 1964. Mrs. Gary, who had lived in Las Vegas since 2000, enjoyed sewing and canning vegetables and fruits that she grew in her garden.

Making good on a campaign promise, County Executive-elect John G. Gary said he will resurrect the Careers Center, a vocational program for troubled teen-agers that was a victim of the budget ax.Under Mr. Gary's proposal, the as yet unnamed program would offer educational and vocational training to about 40 youths who are under the supervision of the juvenile justice system, as was done at the old Careers Center. It would even be housed in the same place, the Winterode Building in Crownsville.

County Executive John G. Gary reappointed yesterday three department heads who served under his predecessor, Robert R. Neall.John R. Hammond, a former Annapolis alderman who gave up his seat after taking a job with Anne Arundel County, will retain his position as financial officer.Jerome W. Klasmeier, whom Mr. Neall brought over from state government to run the Central Services Office, will stay on in that job. Mr. Klasmeier has shepherded the new Circuit Courthouse project through the approval process and will continue to supervise its construction.
