It's Mount Airy's centennial year, and preparations for the town's March celebration of the event are shifting into high gear.Sure to be one of the highlights of the March 26 kickoff banquet is the unveiling of the town's centennial quilt.In the making for more than a year, the quilt shows off the handiwork of Mount Airy's quilters and seamstresses.The 8 1/2 -by-6-foot quilt features scenes of 26 town landmarks, including the old railroad station, Calvary United Methodist Church and famous local houses.

A. Roland Worrall, a retired W. R. Grace & Co. executive who had served several terms as president of the Maryland Horse Show Association and helped to popularize pony clubs in the United States, died Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital of respiratory failure.The resident of Sparks was 89.Known to his friends and associates as Van, Mr. Worrall moved to the Baltimore area in 1949 as general manager of the Davison Chemical Division.He lived in Glencoe until 1960, when he was transferred to Chicago as executive vice president of the Central Farmers Co-operative, a W. R. Grace subsidiary.

Karima Christmas added 13 points for the Blue Devils (27-5), who forced 23 turnovers and out-rebounded the Wolfpack 46-32 in claiming their sixth ACC title and first since winning five in a row from 2000 to 2004. Nikitta Gartrell had 19 points to lead the sixth-seeded Wolfpack (20-13)

Roger C. Skinner Jr., an Annapolis contractor, died Sunday at the Washington Hospital Center of injuries he received May 11 when a private plane in which he was a passenger crashed as it was taking off from the Chesapeake Ranch Airport near Lusby.A memorial service for Mr. Skinner was being held today at the Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Road.It will be preceded by a service at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1080 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville.

The Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department designated Rodney Valentine "Firefighter of the Year" and Kristi Wilson "Rookie of the Year" for 1996 at its annual banquet.Tim Warner, fire chief from 1988 to 1996, and Scott Dayhoff, treasurer from 1984 to 1996, were given awards for service and dedication.Howard Legore was honored for being given a volunteer award from the state. Ronnie Legore was recognized for being dinner chairman for five years and carnival chairman for nine years.Certificates of appreciation were given to Debbie Gartrell for fire prevention; Mark Davis for in-house training; and Wayne Logue, Greg Dods, Mike Fogle, Barry Cullop, Tim Warner and Dave Bettinger for their work in obtaining and maintaining fire equipment.

MARK YOUR calendar for the 71st annual Mount Airy Volunteer Firemen's Carnival to be held July 20-25 at the Mount Airy carnival grounds at Twin Arch Road and Route 27.Ricky Baker, past president of Mount Airy Fire Company, is the chairman of the carnival committee this year. Bill Lawton, first vice president of the fire company, is co-chairman.This is the largest fund-raising event of the year for the fire company and promises excitement for the whole family, with food, live entertainment, rides and games, including ride-all-night for one price from July 20-22, a $6,000 cash giveaway, the Mount Airy Junior Fire Company raffle, and the Firemen's Parade at 7 p.m. July 23.The fire company auxiliary will serve buffet dinners every evening from 5 p.m. in the air-conditioned activities building on the carnival grounds.

Baltimore's Afro-American newspaper has a rich photo archive - 1.5 million images dating from the Depression, World War II and the civil rights era up to today. But one of the nation's oldest African-American newspapers didn't have the hundreds of thousands of dollars needed to digitize its historic images for the Internet age. Now, thanks to a little robot built by a former Johns Hopkins student, the effort has gotten a lot cheaper. Using off-the-shelf electronics, Thomas Smith, a 2011 Hopkins graduate, built Gado, a swiveling, motorized arm with a nozzle that uses vacuum suction to "grab" photos and place them on a scanner.
