MARLYN TAYLOR GARTRELL passed from this life on January 12, 2009 in St. Michaels, MD. She was born on October 18, 1931 in Olney, MD., raised in Laurel, MD and lived most of her adult life in Burtonsville, MD. For the last 16 years she lived in St. Michaels. Marlyn was predeceased by her parents Mary Alice and Milton Taylor, and her husband, Archibald Gartrell, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Gartrell Houston and son-in-law Sam Houston of Phoenix, MD., son Steve Gartrell and daughter-in-law Elaine Bennett Gartrell of Houston, TX., brothers Eldon Taylor of Beltsville, MD. and Dennis Taylor of St. Louis, Mo., and granddaughters Emma Houston and Kate Gartrell.

On July 20, 2007, Irma Gartrell Lucas Geyer of Chatham, VA after a brief illness. Beloved mother of Marilyn L. Schmitz of Raleigh, NC, Jeannette L. Albanese of Bethesda, MD, and D.C. Lucas Jr. of Paola, KS. She is also survived by one brother, Carroll Gartrell of Kansas, four cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Born in 1919 in Baltimore, she was a long time member of Catonsville United Methodist Church, an accomplished artist and private art teacher. Memorial services were held in Chatham, Va and Baltimore, MD, with internment at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore.

Mount Airy Commission OKs dividing Gartrell propertyMount Airy's planning and zoning commission approved a final plan Monday night which will allow Eugenia Gartrell to divide her property on Prospect Road into two pieces.The owner, who is trying to sell her Victorian home, wants to divide the property so she can sell a lot separate from the house. The subdivision will create a 2.2-acre lot where the house is and a 5.37-acre lot beside it.There are no plans to develop the empty lot.In other commission news, members recommended the board of special appeals approve an exception allowing Jennifer Peffley to open an one-chair beauty shop in her home on Carroll Avenue.

Suspect sought in robbery yesterday at Westminster bank Westminster police are looking for a man who robbed a local bank yesterday. Capt. Randy Barnes said a man walked into BB&T Bank in the 100 block of E. Main St. at 10:20 a.m. and gave a note to a teller demanding money. No weapon was displayed, Barnes said. Authorities said the teller gave the robber an undisclosed amount of money before he fled on foot. No one was injured, Barnes said. Barnes described the suspect as a black man about 40 years old, 5 feet, 6 inches tall and 170 pounds.

Edward Leo Starr Jr., a retired Martin-Marietta manager, died Monday at the University of Maryland Medical Center of injuries from an automobile accident April 2. The Catonsville resident was 76. Born in Baltimore and raised in Mount Washington, he attended the Shrine of the Sacred Heart Parochial School. He was a 1947 graduate of the old St. Charles Seminary in Catonsville and earned a degree from St. Mary's Seminary in 1949. Mr. Starr decided not to enter the priesthood and went on to earn a master's degree in social work from Catholic University of America in 1952.

A large Victorian house in Mount Airy was damaged Friday when fire erupted within its walls.Eugenia Gartrell, who stood in the rain near her 100-year-old house while firefighters battled the fire, said, "I was in the kitchen on the first floor [about 12:50 p.m.] and heard a loud squealing noise and thought I left the telephone off the hook."The noise turned out to be a smoke detector."I followed the sound to the third floor, and saw smoke in the hall- way near a bedroom and smoke coming through the wall," Ms. Gartrell said.

Looking to keep pace with growth and increased demands for police service, the towns of Hampstead and Manchester have hired rookie officers who begin 18 weeks of training Monday.Taking advantage of a three-year Department of Justice grant, which provides 75 percent of salary and benefits, Hampstead has hired Stacey Hager, its first female officer, and Manchester has hired Patrick Gartrell, its first rookie.With Hager, 25, of Catonsville, Hampstead will have a force of seven officers, including Chief Kenneth Meekins.
