The Garrison Forest field hockey team, which moved up the No. 2 ranking in the Baltimore Sun poll, played like a top team Monday when it dominated play and beat the visiting No. 7 Century Knights 4-1. "Sometimes you can control and dominate and still see the other team take the lead," said Garrison Forest coach Traci Davis. "We had a bunch of corners and couldn't score and Century got two good chances and made one of them count. It wasn't until after we took a time out and regrouped that we were able to make strong moves and finish.

Lil Shelton, the long-time coach of the No. 2 Severna Park field hockey team, doesn't like being ahead by one goal late in a game. "It makes me nervous," she said. But Monday, with sophomore Liz Matta in goal, she didn't have to worry. Under pressure, Matta, who made 11 saves — at least five of them in the last nine minutes — was exhilarated by the challenge being brought by a determined Garrison Forrest squad, and held on to lead the visiting Falcons to a 2-1 victory. The win improves Severna Park's record to 3-0, while No. 3 Garrison Forest drops to 2-1. Adding to the excitement was the fact the game matched two long-time successful programs.

Sabriaya Shipley enrolled in a summer learning program that her mother promised would offer new experiences. But when the 15-year-old city girl discovered those experiences would be on horseback at a school in Baltimore County, she balked, at least a bit. "At first I said, 'No way,'" said Sabriaya, a rising sophomore at the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore. "I never thought I would even get on a horse, let alone lead one around the ring. Now I am trotting on one. Now I can say I play polo.

In the summer of 1996, 11-year-old Forest Boyce, like a lot of other little girls, wanted to ride horses. And she found a way to do that by working at the farm of late, renowned point-to-point jockey Mike Smithwick in Monkton, where Boyce grew up. Soon she was there on weekends. When school started she was there before classes. When the weather got cold and rain and snow began to fall, she was still there. Year after year. "Forest sort of grew up with us," said trainer Alex White, who worked at Smithwick's farm for more than 20 years before being out on her own the past 10. "I think she wanted to be a jockey when she was 16 years old. But her parents, myself and [trainer]
