For Nick Markakis to win last night's game, he had to rely on his memory as much as his swing. In typical fashion, both were impeccable. White Sox@Orioles Today, 1:35 p.m., Ch. 13, MASN2, 105.7 FM Starters: Jose Contreras (5-10, 5.19) vs. Garrett Olson (0-0, 4.15)

CHICAGO -- No matter how many pitches Daniel Cabrera threw in the first three innings, his outing still was salvageable when Tadahito Iguchi came to the plate with a man on third and two outs in the fourth inning last night. Cabrera had performed an admirable job of damage control through the first three innings, and all he needed to do to get out of another jam was make a quality pitch to Iguchi. He couldn't, walking him and bringing up the one guy in the Chicago White Sox lineup Oriole pitchers want to avoid.

CHICAGO -- It was a moment where sentiment could have easily prevailed over judgment. Garrett Olson had overcome nerves and 10 base runners just to get to this point, where he was two outs away from being eligible for a victory in his major league debut. But Orioles interim manager Dave Trembley walked to the mound, took the ball from the 23-year-old pitcher and offered a reassuring word. Trembley, who managed 2,782 games in the minor leagues before getting his shot in the majors, appreciates more than anybody else the opportunity to succeed at the game's highest level.

TORONTO -- The Orioles have tried to make it known to Garrett Olson that he's not rehearsing for a spot in next year's rotation. They want him to relax, take the ball every five days and be himself without the burden of massive expectations. But make no mistake: Club officials are watching the organization's top pitching prospect closely, looking to see how Olson assimilates himself into the major leagues. Can he throw all his pitches for strikes? Can he make in-game adjustments? How will he handle adversity?

BOSTON -- When Dave Trembley walked into the law office of Peter Angelos on Thursday, the Orioles' new manager meeting the team's owner for the first time, they shook hands and Trembley was given an immediate piece of advice. "The first thing that he said to me was, `Dave, don't look so dejected,' " Trembley said before last night's game. "He knows what's going on here. ... I needed [that]." ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Radhames Liz should have seen it coming. Not the ball that slammed into his left leg in the first inning, but the likelihood that his third major league start would turn gruesome. It's not easy being an Oriole these days, even when you've barely had time to learn everyone's name. Misfortune finds the rookies as easily as line drives.
