BY KAYAK, on a calm summer day, it's less than a half-hour's paddle to what my guide calls the "most un-Chesapeake" of all the bay's islands - also the one whose future direction most hangs in the balance just now. The bay has about 50 of the world's estimated half-million islands, and they cover an intriguing range of uses: from watermen's communities such as Smith, Tangier, Tilghman and Deal; to a combination bombing range and wildlife refuge on...

On Sept. 23, 1908, a portion of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad bridge span between Garrett Island and the Cecil shore collapsed just as the last of a freight train of loaded coal cars passed over. One span of 377 feet across the Susquehanna River at Havre de Grace and all the falsework supporting the bridge structure fell into the deep water. Twelve coal cars at the end of the train dropped into the river, but the locomotive had successfully crossed and remained intact. Only one person was injured.

A Cecil County teen drowned yesterday evening in the Susquehanna River after he and his parents fell from a boat into the river under the U.S. 40 bridge in Havre de Grace. About 7:15 p.m., the 19-year-old and his parents were in a 14-foot boat powered by an outboard motor near Garrett Island when, for an unknown reason, all three were tossed into the water, said Scott Hurst, chief of the Susquehanna Hose Company in Havre de Grace. Hurst said two people on personal watercraft witnessed the incident and rescued the parents.

Car hits girl, 12, as she crosses Hilltop Lane in Annapolis A 12-year-old girl was struck by a car Friday morning as she crossed an Annapolis street, police said. The child might have been headed to a school bus stop when she walked across Hilltop Lane near Boxwood Road about 7:35 a.m., said Annapolis police spokesman Ray Weaver. Initial reports indicated the girl was not in a crosswalk when struck, he said. The girl suffered what appeared to be serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, said Douglas M. Maryland Natural Resources Police are investigating a boating accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Rising Sun man Sunday evening. Fur trading? Nah, they do that everywhere. Ferry boat transport? Historically important perhaps, but not terribly exciting. The search for a compelling new museum program led history aficionados in Havre de Grace to a swashbuckling conclusion with a strong local tie: pirates. "Pirates are becoming as big as Civil War re-enactors," said Rebecca Fitzgerald, executive director of the Susquehanna Museum. "There has been a resurgence and awareness of modern-day piracy, and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have made it popular to be a pirate."
