Garnet "Buddy" Troyer, a horse trainer who early in his career prepared thoroughbreds at Baltimore County's Sagamore Farm and regularly exercised the legendary racehorse Native Dancer, died of cancer Friday at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa. The former Glyndon resident was 70. Born in Baltimore, he was raised on the grounds of the Greenspring Hunt Club, where his father tended the hounds. A 1953 Franklin High School graduate, he served in the Air Force in North Africa. He then became a caretaker and ran the horse breeding stable at Piney Grove, the Butler-area estate of Elizabeth Nichols, and worked for well-known Maryland horsemen Henry Clark and Harry A. Love before becoming the farm trainer at Sagamore -where Native Dancer was standing at stud.

Praise be for some fashion lights at last night's 66th annual Academy Awards. We were getting worried after last year's lack of luster. In recent years, Oscar night gawking has disappointed -- too much black, too much simple. The spark kicked in when mistress of ceremonies Whoopi Goldberg made her entrance in an empire-waisted garnet velvet gown. Go girl! And with a train yet.Publicity blurbs said Whoopi would wear an androgynous tux, shirt and tie by Giorgio Armani. We love a surprise. The Oscars were off to a good fashion start.

In Megan Hildebrandt's amusing painting of Mary Pickersgill, the famed flag-maker stares wryly as she sews the Stars and Stripes. C. Lee's affectionate photograph of his late mother hangs beside it. It is an odd juxtaposition: the humorous Pickersgill next to the tender, loving parent. Such juxtapositions are common at the Creative Alliance's The Big Show. The show, which opens tomorrow, provides a forum solely for members' artwork, an "in-house" celebration of art. "I think that we want, as an organization, to just present the kind of collected creativity of our members and the artists of Baltimore in the best possible manner, so we hang the art and show it in its best light," said Creative Alliance artistic director Jed Dodds.

Leaping lizards! Velvet is back for men this fall. No, not lounge-lizard wear, but beautiful silk- and cotton-based velvet blazers in colors like black, chocolate brown and garnet. "Velvet blazers are being tipped as one of the season's hottest items for men -- for fashion-conscious men, that is," says David Wolfe of the Doneger Group, which forecasts fashion trends. In New York, velvet blazers are selling like crazy, in spite of the warm weather. Stephen Cardino, men's fashion director for Macy's East, says most of the store's stock is being bought at this point by 16- to 24-year-olds who wear them clubbing.

1996 Saintsbury Garnet Carneros Pinot Noir ($14).This junior member of the Saintsbury pinot noir team has emerged as one of California's most reliable names in pinot noir. Year in and year out -- and 1996 is no different -- it offers lively, bright, black cherry fruit in a medium-light package. It has the Burgundian spirit, though not the exact flavors of fine Burgundy. Try it with grilled chicken or tuna.Pub Date: 11/9/97
