Los Angeles' Jon Garland has had vastly divergent performances lately, going a full nine in a 7-1 win this month and then not making it out of the third inning in his next start.

On February 24,2008, LEON DAVID ISRAEL of Garland, TX., formerly of Union Bridge and Baltimore, MD., after a brief illness; loving husband of the late Beverly (Goldberg) Israel; beloved father of Helen Kravitz of Scottsdale, AZ., Libby Hewes of San Diego, CA. and Eric Israel of Garland, TX.; devoted brother of Adele Loew of Baltimore, MD. and the late Jules Israel of Miami, FL. Also survived by four grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held in Garland, Texas on Tuesday, March 4.

Culture of violence pervades prisons The Sun's editorial "Mishandling evidence" (Dec. 20) sheds light on an area of significant need and concern - the need to end prison violence and change the culture that allows it to flourish. The end to prison violence will occur only with a commitment from the state - a commitment that was made on paper during the 2007 legislative session. Legislators voted to convene a Prison Violence Task Force charged with looking at this issue and submitting a preliminary report by Dec. 31. This task force has not convened its first meeting, and as a result, the deadline will come and go while the conditions that motivated the planned report remain unabated.

The Los Angeles Angels, one of the most aggressive suitors for Miguel Tejada in the past couple of years, still are looking for a bat, and now they have a vacancy at shortstop with yesterday's trade of Orlando Cabrera to the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Jon Garland. An industry source said yesterday that the Orioles and Angels have not had any significant discussions recently about Tejada, who is expected to be traded this offseason. However, another league source said the Angels would be interested in Tejada to potentially play third base if the club can't make a trade for Florida Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera.

Sara Garland Montague, a professional dancer turned Baltimore County schoolteacher, died Wednesday at Shenandoah Health Village Center in West Virginia of complications from a stroke. The longtime Pikesville resident was 82. Born Sara Garland in Gaffney, S.C., she was the daughter of the town pharmacist and optometrist. She trained as a chemist at the University of North Carolina and moved to Baltimore after graduation in 1944 to work at Calvert Distilleries, where she met her future husband, Wallace G. Montague.

On Wednesday, August 1, 2007, EGHOSA EHIGIAMUSOE-MINES departed this world to be with God. He is survived by his beloved mother, Patricia Mines, daughter Chloe Glover, sister, Porter Ferrebee, brother, Osagie Ehigiamusoe, aunts, Linda and June Mines, uncles, Ronny, Danny, Freddy and Tommy Mines, grandparents, Garland and Lillie Mines, cousins, Garland and Jeremy Mines and a host of other loved ones.
