An All-Metro midfielder and Anne Arundel County Player of the Year for the 20-0 Class 4A-3A state champion Falcons last year as a junior, Gardner is looking to close out her high school career in style. Gardner scored four of her 50 goals in the 13-9 victory over Dulaney in the state final. Her outstanding, instinctive dodging ability baffles opposing defenders and drew attention of such colleges as Virginia, Duke, North Carolina and Maryland, to mention a few. She has accepted a lacrosse scholarship to Virginia, although she also has been a standout in field hockey and indoor track.

Gardner selected for Rep Stage job Rep Stage, the professional theater in residence at Howard Community College, has announced the hiring of Lee Mikeska Gardner as managing director. Gardner has been interim managing director since July. He previously held the position of grants writer and consultant from January to July last year. Before he came to the Rep Stage, Gardner spent six years as managing/producing director with the Washington Shakespeare Theatre Company, six years with Shenandoah Playwrights Retreat as associate artistic director and resident director and 12 years with the Wooly Mammoth Theatre Company as assistant to the artistic director, artistic associate, and founder and director of the Theatre School at the Wooly Mammoth.

After visiting Brazil, filmmaker Mari Gardner wanted to do something to foster intercultural exchange with the country. So two years ago, she worked with the Creative Alliance to create ?Viva Brasil! The third annual three-day celebration kicks off tomorrow and includes film, Brazilian food and drink, dancing, music and a capoeira demonstration. The film screening tomorrow is Gardner's Violence Next Door: Growing Up in the Favela and the Hood and came out of an exchange between Rio de Janeiro and Baltimore youths.

City police were seeking a physician suffering from cancer and depression who was reported missing Sunday by her parents, said a detective assigned to the Police Department's missing-persons unit. Lorraine Fertsch, 49, who was last seen leaving her home in the 3000 block of Abell Ave. near Union Memorial Hospital, is a private physician who might be suicidal, Detective Timothy Gardner said. When last seen, Fertsch, who is 5 feet 8 and 240 pounds, was wearing a purple hat, gray jacket, a gray sweater, navy blue sweat pants and clog shoes, Gardner said.

Albert James Gardner Jr., a retired senior vice president of the old Equitable Trust Co., died of congestive heart failure Saturday at Howard County General Hospital. The Ellicott City resident was 91. Born in Baltimore, he was a 1934 graduate of Forest Park High School. He studied at the Baltimore College of Commerce and the Johns Hopkins University and was a certified public accountant Before joining Equitable Trust Co. in 1960, he was the Gunther Brewing Co.'s assistant vice president.

If farmers moved as slowly as Congress, there would be no corn crop this year. Nearly three months have passed since the 2002 federal Farm Bill expired, and representatives in Washington continue to struggle to come up with a replacement. It could be some time -- maybe even a year or more -- before lawmakers decide on a new nationwide farm policy. That's a prediction from Bruce Gardner, a professor at the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, who has been closely following the agriculture debate on Capitol Hill.
