When Tracey Leigh Gardner went missing five years ago, relatives, friends and even strangers, fearing the worst, spent months looking for her body in vacant lots, empty houses, woods and ponds. They passed out fliers, held vigils, set up a website and made frequent appeals through the news media. The only person who never joined the quest was her husband, Dennis J. Tetso, according to testimony Tuesday in Baltimore County Circuit Court during his trial for first-degree murder in the presumed death of his wife, who vanished on her way to a Motley Crue concert in Washington and whose body has not been found.

An Annapolis man who said he "just snapped" and fatally shot his former girlfriend and her boyfriend after hearing them in bed together was sentenced Friday to life in prison. Elbert Gardner Jr., 57, was given two concurrent life sentences for the slayings last June of Lei Tyree Johnson, 38, and Samuel Marshall Fowlkes, 49. Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Ronald A. Silkworth gave Gardner another five years for briefly trying to suffocate Johnson's 12-year-old son, Anthony. Gardner, who was holding three jobs at the time, including one as a supply technician at the Naval Academy, had rented a house with Johnson after leaving his wife of 35 years.

An Annapolis man who told police that he "just snapped" when he heard his former girlfriend and her boyfriend in bed in a room above him pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of first-degree murder in their fatal shootings. When Elbert Gardner Jr. returns to court March 19, Deputy Anne Arundel County State's Attorney William D. Roessler expects to seek two consecutive life sentences for the killings last June of Lei Tyree Johnson, 38, and Samuel Marshall Fowlkes, 49. The defense will ask that the sentences be served together with some years suspended, said public defender Katy C. O'Donnell.

Elbert Gardner Jr. was in his basement apartment late Tuesday night when he heard his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend together in her bedroom. Gardner, who still shared the rental house with Lei Tyree Johnson on a quiet Annapolis street, grabbed his .38-caliber revolver from under a pillow and went upstairs, he told police. The 56-year-old Navy veteran shot Samuel Marshall Fowlkes Jr., 49, once in the head, then shot his 38-year-old former girlfriend once in the chest, charging documents say. On the way out of the bedroom, he ran into his ex-girlfriend's 12-year-old son, Anthony.
