The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company handled nearly 500 calls in January, a single-month record for fire and emergency calls.Firefighters and emergency service personnel responded to 198 fire-related calls and 300 emergency calls, an average of more than 16 calls per day, said Richard Gardiner, spokesman for the fire company.In contrast, the all-volunteer organization handled only 96 calls during January 1993, he said. The fire company handled an average of 309 calls per month in 1993 and 288 calls per month in 1992.

Mondawmin Mall, a West Baltimore landmark and the city's oldest shopping mall, will be spruced up and expanded with a large new supermarket and a warehouse-size specialty chain, mall representatives said yesterday.The mall's owner, Rouse Co., will build a 58,000-square-foot grocery store on the southern edge of the center and, in a second phase of development, construct a 132,000-square-foot store at the northwest corner, said Brian K. Gardiner, vice president and general manager for Mondawmin.

Thomas B. MickleInsurance agentThomas B. Mickle, who had been an insurance agent and manager of a shoe store, died Friday of cancer at his West Baltimore home. He was 79.He retired about 12 years ago after 15 years with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Earlier, he had worked for 25 years as manager of a Thom McAn shoe store at Pennsylvania Avenue and Laurens Street.Born in Camden, S.C., but reared in Baltimore, he was a 1935 graduate of Douglass High School and attended what are now Morgan State and Hampton (Va.)

In Anne Arundel Water restrictions lifted for northwest residents ANNAPOLIS -- Water restrictions imposed on residents of northwest Anne Arundel County because of a water-main break were lifted yesterday after public works crews isolated the leak and repaired the line. Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens imposed restrictions prohibiting outdoor water use and limiting indoor consumption Friday, a day after the break in the Baltimore City line, which feeds parts of Anne Arundel County, was discovered.

A truck loaded with big-screen television sets struck a car just yards from the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company in Severna Park about 3 p.m. yesterday, snarling traffic on Ritchie Highway and sending all four people involved to local hospitals. Witnesses said the truck, which was driven by Eugene Davis, 30, of Columbia, went out of control on Ritchie Highway near the Magothy Bridge Road intersection. A few cars that were stopped at a traffic light managed to steer toward the grassy median and get out of the truck's path.

St. Mary's will introduce Bob Valvano as its men's basketball coach today, according to a source at the college.The Southern Maryland school has called an 11 a.m. news conference at the Capital Centre.The younger brother of former North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano, Valvano spent the last three seasons at Catholic University, where his teams improved from 8-18 to 9-17 to 21-6. He was fired last March, however, when the administration said that his coaching methods did not meet school standards, particularly in his use of profanity at practices.

An 18-year-old Frostburg State University freshman who lived in one of the school's dorms died last night of what is being described as a meningitis-like illness.Jesse Gardiner, 18, of Frederick County died at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland after becoming ill over the weekend. University officials said the cause of death was a bacterial blood infection -- meningococcal bacteremia."Right now, the death is an isolated case and we're encouraging anyone with close contact to get immediate treatment," Frostburg spokesman Ty DeMartino said last night.
