Sister Catherine Stephen Moyer, a retired parochial school teacher, died of Alzheimer's disease complications Friday at her order's retirement home in Aston, Pa. She was 86. Born Elizabeth Anna Moyer in Lebanon, Pa., she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1948. She took the name Catherine Stephen and earned a bachelor's degree at Mount St. Mary University in Emmitsburg. Sister Catherine Stephen was an elementary school teacher at Immaculate Conception School in Towson and at St. Clement Mary Hofbauer parochial school in Rosedale.

Sister Ann Bernadette Cafferty, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia who spent 45 years at Mount St. Mary's College, died of cancer Thursday at her order's retirement home in Aston, Pa. She was 91. Born Bernadette Theresa Cafferty in Baltimore and raised in East Baltimore, she entered her congregation in 1935 and took the name Ann Bernadette. She did domestic work for her order at Immaculate Conception Convent in Elkton and moved to Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg in 1939, where she worked and was a driver for students and seminarians until 1984.

On Saturday, August 2, 2003, PAUL EDER, 86, of 8911 Talc Drive, Rosedale, departed this life after a lengthy illness. He retired from Clendenon Bros. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Eder was son of the late Joseph Raymond and Albertina Eder. He is survived by his wife Florence Eder, his children, Alice Widerman, of Essex, MD, Edna Nieberlein, of Gardenville, MD, and one son Arthur Eder, of Edgewood, MD. Also survived by ten grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Anthony's of Padua Church on Saturday at 12 noon.

As part of his assignment, he completed a paper on computers for which he won first prize.*Diane Kurowski of Perry Hall has been awarded the Lions Club of Gardenville Scholarship at Essex Community College.*Loren Siebert, a computer science major at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, has been awarded the Marshall Scholarship, which enables Americans to study for a degree at any university in Great Britain.

Raymond H. Gaskin, a retired restaurant owner, died Monday after a heart attack at his Lancaster, Pa., home. He was 68.Services for Mr. Gaskin, who also maintained a home in Ocean City, were being held today at the Leroy M. and Russell C. Witzke Funeral Home, 1630 Edmondson Ave., Catonsville.The Baltimore native retired about four years ago. He had owned and operated the Hacienda Restaurant on Belair Road in the Gardenville area for about eight years. For 10 years before that, he owned Gaskin's Restaurant on Howard Street's Antiques Row. He began his career as a restaurant owner in Ellicott City, where he ran an establishment called Gaskin's for more than 10 years.

Maj. Robert J. Marchanti II, 48, was buried Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery. Marchanti, a 25-year member of the Maryland National Guard, was one of two officers killed last month in Afghanistan. Violence erupted in Kabul, where Marchanti was stationed, when it was revealed that copies of the Quran had been burned at a NATO base in Bagram. The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying the deaths were punishment for burning the Muslim holy book. Gov. Martin O'Malley ordered U.S. and Maryland flags flown at half-staff Tuesday in Marchanti's memory.

William V. Treherne, a retired Baltimore City police sergeant, died Thursday of heart disease at Franklin Square Hospital Center. The Gardenville resident was 83. He worked for the Baltimore Police Department from 1947 to 1968, rising from beat patrolman to sergeant and garnering more than 20 commendations. He retired on disability from the Eastern District precinct after his hand was injured on the job. He was born in Baltimore. Raised in Walbrook, he was active in sports as a child.

Wanda L. Eyring, a former Gardenville cosmetologist and volunteer, died of chronic lung disease Monday at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. She was 84. Born Wanda Grynkiewicz in Baltimore, she was raised on Eastern Avenue and attended Eastern High School until 11th grade, when she left to help support her family. She later earned her general equivalency diploma. Mrs. Eyring, who learned her trade from her mother, operated a beauty salon in her Gardenville home from the 1960s until the late 1970s.

John F. Kelly, former clerk of the Baltimore City Circuit Court, died of a heart attack Thursday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Gardenville resident was 85. Born in Baltimore and raised on North Avenue, he attended the old St. Katharine of Siena Parochial School and was a 1941 Polytechnic Institute graduate. He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war he joined the Baltimore City courts system and remained with it for 36 years and worked in what is now the Mitchell Courthouse in downtown Baltimore.

Harry A. Love, 87, Maryland horse breederHarry A. Love, a Maryland horse breeder, died Thursday at Union Memorial Hospital of complications from a stroke. He was 87.On his Butler farm, Mr. Love raised championship horses, such as Peale, who was Steeplechase Horse of the Year in 1962, and Third Army, who won the Maryland Hunt Cup and the Grand National in 1953. Mr. Love also was an avid fox hunter with the Green Spring Valley Hounds.The Baltimore native played varsity lacrosse for Johns Hopkins University and was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific during World War II.A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at St. John's Episcopal Church in Glyndon.
