Four classic cars were destroyed Friday morning in a two-alarm fire in Taneytown.The vehicles, as well as some carpeting, were stored in a wooden garage in the first block of Mill Avenue owned by Lloyd Hovermale, fire officials said.A 1952 Ford pickup, a 1966 Ford Mustang, a Chevrolet Chevelle, a Pontiac Firebird and another vehicle were in the building when the fire began about 6 a.m., fire officials said.A second alarm was sounded at 6:13 a.m. because of the blaze's intensity and the nearness of a 2 1/2 -story house.

A family of five fled into freezing temperatures when smoldering ashes left in a garage ignited a fire at their Scaggsville home early yesterday, fire officials said.No one was injured in the 12:20 a.m. fire in the 10300 block of Derby Drive, but two cars and other property inside the garage and home were destroyed.The fire caused $200,000 in damage, fire officials said.Cold weather and ice hampered firefighters' efforts to fight the blaze, said Lt. Ken Byerly, a Howard County fire spokesman.

Firefighters in southwest Carroll found themselves fighting one fire and answering another call nearby yesterday afternoon.At 2:15 p.m. firefighters from Winfield, Westminster, Gamber and Reese were dispatched to a house fire on Salem Bottom Road between Nicodemus and Bloom Road.The fire started in an automobile parked in the driveway near the attached garage, fire officials said.Flames spreadfrom the car to the garage and were confined to that portion of the dwelling by the firefighters.
