They gathered at Potomac Community Center for game night as they do every Wednesday; never mind that it was the day after Christmas. Initially, they considered playing board and card games unfamiliar to most of the public but popular among the gaming faithful: Qwirkle, Anno 1503 and Loot. But ultimately, the evening would begin with a traditional favorite. "I want to say it's been a long time since I played Uno, but actually I played about a month ago," said Wei-Hwa Huang, 32, a software engineer at California-based Google who was visiting his hometown of North Potomac for the holidays.

The last time The Sun visited with Doug Wetzel, he was arm-deep in sauerkraut , preparing for the annual "KrautFest" at Gertrude's restaurant, where he is the executive pastry chef and, as owner John Shields calls him, the "kitchen czar. " But Wetzel cleaned up real good, judging from an NBC publicity photo, for his appearance on "Hollywood Game Night. " Hosted by Jane Lynch ("Glee"), the show has two celebrity teams, each captained by a civilian like Wetzel,  compete in various parlor-style guessing games.

Of all the college basketball games Todd Bozeman has coached in over the past 20 years, two have given him the most recognition. The first came in St. Louis during the 1993 NCAA tournament, when a Jason Kidd-led California team coached by a 29-year-old Bozeman, who replaced Lou Campanelli after he was fired mid-season, beat two-time defending champion Duke in the Sweet 16. "My guys had always said they wanted to play Duke," Bozeman recalled earlier...

So far in 2012, Hampden has been a pretty crazy place. What I mean is, right before I sat down to write this column, I was outside trying to take a picture of a clown. No, I don't mean some goofball, I literally mean a clown. As in party clown. I noticed one across the street, hanging out. So I thought I'd try to get a picture of her. But then she kept staring at me and I became frightened. Clowns can be scary - just ask any child. So then, I'd go back inside and try to sneak back out, but she'd see me and keep staring at me and I'd get afraid all over again.

WASHINGTON - Washington Capitals goalie Olie Kolzig made two desperate, back-to-back saves in the third period last night, but he couldn't make the turn fast enough to stop Sean Avery's wrist shot into the open left side of the net. That goal, Avery's first of the season, turned out to be the game-winner at MCI Center in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. "It's a broken record," said Kolzig, his voice shaking with emotion as his team fell to 3-11-1 to remain the worst team in the NHL. "I've never experienced anything like this as a pro or amateur.

COLLEGE PARK -- There wasn't much pomp and there was even less circumstance yesterday as the University of Maryland men's basketball team opened its season, the first being played at the $108 million Comcast Center. The Terrapins, last season's national champions, didn't exactly give the sellout crowd of 17,950 much to get excited about, putting on an uneven performance in their 64-49 victory over Miami of Ohio. "It was hard to get too excited about the way we played," said Maryland coach Gary Williams.

Ravens running back Ray Rice shook his head for a moment while reflecting on one of the most frustrating aspects of this difficult season. No one in the NFL has been involved in as many close games as the Ravens this season, and the results haven't been favorable for the 5-6 team. The Ravens are 2-4 in games decided by three points or fewer. A year ago, it was a different story as the Ravens finished 5-3 in three-point games during the regular season on their way to winning the Super Bowl.

On couches all over Baltimore, J.J. Hardy's game-winning RBI double in the 13th inning must have seemed like a dream, especially since the Orioles spent most of Thursday night putting fans to sleep with their offensive ineptitude. As the night crept into early Friday morning, the Orioles' bats finally showed a much-needed sign of life. Hardy's double to left drove in Manny Machado, and the O's forced a decisive Game 5 of the American League Division Series with a 2-1 Game 4 triumph over the New York Yankees in front of an announced 49,307 at Yankee Stadium.

Just when things were starting to look up for the Orioles, they banged face-first into their glass ceiling again this weekend. They battled back to the .500 mark with an impressive five-game winning streak at Camden Yards, but faced with an opportunity to rise above sea level for the first time since mid-April — and a very ripe opportunity to beat one of the hottest young pitchers in the game late Friday night — they showed again why they are...
