Sandra Gallion has had a view from an emergency vehicle since she was 16 years old. She rode fire engines with the Level Volunteer Fire Department, and saw firsthand what people in emergency situations go through. She saw people at their most vulnerable and didn't know where to start, but she wanted to do something to help. About 11 years ago, her nephew died of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and Gallion's desire to do something intensified. "Because of my nephew, I felt something needed to be done," said Gallion, who works as an ambulance captain and EMT-IV tech.

The sisters walk in to the Fort Avenue ice cream shop, white hair freshly curled and firmly in place, looking like twins despite the seven years between them. The man behind the counter knows what to get them without even asking, because they've known him since he was a little boy, and they could tell some stories on him if they wanted. Still, Earl Gallion can't resist teasing them. "I ain't got no chocolate, dumpling," he tells Elizabeth Hall, 79 - knowing what she really wants, what she always wants, is four vanilla milkshakes to go. She'll keep them in the freezer, and dip into them little by little, until she and her 86-year-old sister walk up Jackson Street for more.

A five-game winning streak may be rare for the Harford Tech boys soccer team, but a victory over Edgewood is unprecedented. The Cobras accomplished both Monday with a 2-1 win over the Rams, their first victory against Edgewood. It stretched Harford Tech's winning streak to five -- it was broken the next day with a loss to Elkton -- and provided further evidence of the Cobras' progress this season. DREAMING entrepreneurial dreams, a hairdresser I know wondered aloud about the kind of business that could work well in tandem with a hair salon. "A coffee bar," she said. "Yeah, a coffee bar would work. Or how about a sushi bar? Or a book store maybe. How about an ice cream parlor?"Sorry, my dear. That's been done. You can find such a place in Locust Point. (But you can't find it on Mondays. It's closed Mondays. Scott Erickson, the Orioles hunk, went there for a haircut on a Monday, and the women of the shop have been sick about missing him ever since.

Nowadays, it is a rare treat to see the word coddies on a menu, but not so long ago this uniquely Baltimore food was as close as your corner store, malt shop or confectionery. Coddies are not to be confused with cod cakes. While recipes for coddies vary, a coddie can be best described as a hand-formed, gently seasoned mashed-potato-and-cracker mixture that is always deep-fried and traditionally served between two saltine crackers topped with yellow mustard. It contains little or no cod. Served at room temperature, today's coddies are made slightly larger than in the past, hanging over the sides of the saltines by one-half inch all around.
