JERUSALEM -- The Sea of Galilee, on whose banks loaves and fishes multiplied and disciples were recruited, is gaining a legend of considerably lesser import. Some people say a crocodile lives there. The first report came a few weeks ago from a woman visiting her sister on a kibbutz. Since then, several more people said they saw a reptile in the sea.The accounts have prompted daily searches by rangers and volunteers and have provided grist for picnic-table talk for the thousands of vacationers who flock to the Galilee in the summer.

KORAZIM, Israel -- High above the Sea of Galilee, Pope John Paul II invoked one of the Gospel's most powerful passages before 80,000 mostly young faithful yesterday, telling them to reject the idea that only war, deviousness and persecution yield success. The world's apparent "losers," he promised, will win in the end. "Blessed are you," his voice rang out to applause as some in the crowd wept. The pope quoted the Beatitudes, the essence of Jesus' teaching, near the traditional scene of the Sermon on the Mount at a morning Mass that drew modern Israel's biggest-ever Christian gathering, a highlight of his seven-day Holy Land pilgrimage.

EIN GEV, Israel -- Rising imposingly to Israel's north and east, the Golan Heights claims center stage in a drawn-out, frustrating search to end a half-century of conflict between the Jewish state and Syria. This is the terrain that comes to mind when envoys in the Middle East peace process try to persuade the Syrians to make a deal with the Israelis, as Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright did yesterday in her visit to Damascus. But an important, seldom-spotlighted part of the struggle is a narrow strip of land near this kibbutz along the Sea of Galilee.

DEIR HANNA, Israel -- The sons and daughters of Ahmad and Amina Khateeb return to the olive groves of the Galilee about this time every year. They gather under the trees, the fruit heavy and clean from the first rains. Together, they harvest the crop from the fields of their forefathers.Saleh, at 37 the youngest of the 13 Khateeb children, pokes an oak staff into the leafy, green boughs and shakes it. Olives fall like hail on the plastic tarps spread beneath the trees. The women sift through the fallen fruit for fat green olives.
