Anita Carter, 66, who sang and played stand-up bass with the country music act the Carter Sisters, died Thursday in Nashville, Tenn.The younger sister of June Carter Cash and sister-in-law of Johnny Cash had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for several years. The cause of death was not immediately known.Rear Adm. Hugh Balfour, 66, who helped modernize Britain's Royal Navy, was the captain of a destroyer in the Falkland Islands War and later commanded Oman's navy, died of cancer June 29 in London.

Ann E. Jensen, a homemaker and animal-rights advocate, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at Keswick Multi-Care Center. The Evergreen resident was 86. Born Anna Elizabeth Trabert in East Baltimore, she was a 1938 Seton High School graduate who earned an associate's degree in journalism at the old Mount Saint Agnes College in Mount Washington. She also attended Strayer Business School. Many years ago, she worked for developer James Rouse at his Moss Rouse Co., a mortgage business.

Earl Carter, a retired technical engineer and World War II veteran, died Friday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center of complications from a fall. He was 77. Mr. Carter was born in Jenkins, Ky., and moved to Baltimore as a teen-ager. He attended city public schools and later earned his General Education Development diploma. During World War II, he served as a Navy signalman in the Pacific. After returning in 1947, he worked at Rustless Iron & Steel Co. in East Baltimore before joining Bendix Corp.

Unbeaten Sanabelle Island, the 3-year-old Maryland-bred pacing filly, races today for her 24th straight win in the toughest test of her career, the $350,000 Mistletoe Shalee Stakes at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.A victory would match the streak of the great pacing mare Handle With Care, who won 24 consecutive races at the beginning of her career in 1973 and 1974. The record for consecutive wins by a Standardbred is 41 (Carty Nagle, 1937-38)."If she wins this race -- and it's a tough one; there're a couple of fillies in there that can go with her -- I don't see how anybody at that point can deny that she's the greatest filly who ever wore a harness," said her driver and trainer, Steve Warrington of Galena on the Eastern Shore.

William H. Jensen, former owner of an East Baltimore hardware store who was later a paint salesman, died of complications from a heart attack Wednesday at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 90. Born in Norfolk, Va., he moved to Baltimore's South Linwood Avenue as a child and left Polytechnic Institute in his senior year to help support his family by working as a machinist at Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point plant. In 1955, he opened a hardware store at Harford Avenue and Preston Street, and from 1966 until retiring in 1982 worked as a salesman for Budeke's Paints in Fells Point.

Dr. Robert W. Farr, 92, family practice physician Dr. Robert W. Farr, a retired family practice physician who once served as chief of staff for Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital, died Saturday at Heron Point Retirement Home in Chestertown. It was his 92nd birthday. Dr. Farr was born in Parsons W.Va. As a teen-ager, he moved from Halethorpe to Chestertown in 1923 to work on his family's farm. He was salutatorian of his class at Washington College in 1929 and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1934.

Baltimore County police charged three teen-agers in the beating death of a Chase man who police believe was killed Sunday because he "inadvertently provoked" the youths while he was walking by them. Police charged James John Francis, 17, of the 1400 block of Galena Road, Robin Marie Fogle, 18, of the 600 block of Dunwich Way, and Sean Kevin Adams, 19, of the 600 block of Middlesex Road with first-degree murder in the beating death of Charles Edward Pall Sr., 42, of the 900 block of Arncliffe Road.

Raymond B. Blair, co-owner of a Timonium commercial building firm, died from intestinal bleeding Oct. 21 at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 82. Mr. Blair was born in Baltimore and raised in Govans. He attended Mount St. Joseph High School in Irvington, and lied about his age in order to join the Navy during the waning days of World War II, family members said. He went to work for Blair & Sons Construction Co., a commercial construction firm, which had been established by his father in 1919.

John "Jack" M. Luike Sr., an Army ship's captain during World War II, died Thursday of complications of a broken hip at Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown. He was 79. Mr. Luike was born in Betterton, a small town on the Chesapeake Bay in Kent County. He started his career on the water when he was 13, quitting school to join his father as a commercial fisherman until he was drafted into the Army. He was sent to the South Pacific, where he was captain of a mechanized landing craft.
