When Jerry Jones chose Chan Gailey to coach the Dallas Cowboys last February, it concluded one of the most exhaustive coaching searches in recent NFL history.Gailey, offensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the time, came out of the shadows to win the job in the 11th hour of a 34-day process. Still, he was the choice only after former UCLA coach Terry Donahue balked at accepting one of the league's lowest salaries.Among the candidates left in Gailey's wake were former San Francisco 49ers coach George Seifert, a two-time Super Bowl winner, and Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Sherm Lewis.

The Dallas Cowboys can no longer use Bozo the Coach as a scapegoat. When the Cowboys went from America's Team to America's Most Wanted the last couple of years, Barry Switzer, given the Bozo the Coach nickname by one of the New York tabloids, got much of the blame because of his laid-back style. When Chan Gailey, the former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, was hired to replace Switzer, things were supposed to change.Although Gailey's play-calling, especially in the AFC title game last year, has been suspect at times, nobody questioned he was a straight arrow who would hold the players to a higher standard.

The Gailey brothers continue to keep championship golf a family affair at Piney Branch.Among the three of them -- Wayne, Carroll and Steve -- the Gaileys have captured 14 of the club's major championships.Records show that Wayne won the stroke play crown four times and the match play title three times, Carroll is a three-time winner at both stroke and match play, and Steve is a former match play winner.Just as it had been many times in the past, the field for the 1991 stroke play championship narrowed in the stretch run to Wayne and Carroll.

The Gailey brothers -- according to a Piney Branch joke -- may have decided to split the golf club's tournament spoils.Considering their records, the quip has some substance. Between the three of them -- Carol, Wayne and Steve -- they have captured 14 of Piney Branch's major championships, all within the last dozen years.Origin of the joke came from the manner in which Carol and Wayne won the last two match play titles.Last year, Wayne, 53, edged Carol, 50, one up in a scheduled 36-hole final that went 37 holes.
