The Rev. Arthur L. "Billy" Corbin Sr., founder and pastor of the Full Gospel Church of Phoenix and a retired postal worker, died Wednesday at his Phoenix, Baltimore County, home of kidney failure. He was 79. Mr. Corbin, who was born and raised on Warren Road in Cockeysville, attended Baltimore County public schools. "He was 11 when he started preaching and was 18 when he began pastoring his own church," said his wife of 36 years, the former Darce J. Ward, who is a church organist, pianist and soloist.

Phillip L. Solomon, 40, Baptist minister The Rev. Phillip L. Solomon, associate minister of Sacred Zion Full Gospel Baptist Church, died of an HIV-related infection Sunday at Sinai Hospital. He was 40 and lived in Randallstown. A founding member of the Sacred Zion Full Gospel Church on West North Avenue in 1996, he preached his first sermon there in 1997. He was a spiritual counselor and organized the Spirit and Truth Ministry. Born in Baltimore and raised in Pikesville, Mr. Solomon attended Randallstown High School.

FUNKSTOWN -- The steep stairs lead from a western-wear store into a dreamy world of God and gospel. In a dollhouse-sized recording studio that used to be an attic, Russ Neff Jr. produces a gospel radio program called "Country Church Time."Born and raised in nearby Hagerstown, Mr. Neff began recording the half-hour show in 1991.Now, after three years on WPVG-AM -- Funkstown's radio station -- "Country Church Time" is going national.Mr. Neff hopes by the end of the year his program will be on 25 to 30 stations in a half-dozen states.

Baltimore has landed two of its largest conventions ever, back-to-back religious meetings next year which, combined, are expected to bring about 45,000 people into the city over 12 days. The Church of God in Christ Auxiliaries in Ministry will hold its convention July 1-6, bringing in an estimated 25,000 people, followed by the Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship on July 9-12, which is expected to draw about 20,000. "This sends a great message that Baltimore is a major destination," said Carroll R. Armstrong, president and chief executive officer of the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association.
