The four-way race for the Democratic nomination for attorney general became a three-person contest Tuesday night as Del. C. William Frick dropped his faltering campaign. Frick, 39, withdrew his candidacy Tuesday night -- about an hour before the 9 p.m. filing deadline. He immediately signed up to run for re-election to the Montgomery County House seat he has held for the past two terms. " My two terms in the House have been exceptional," Frick said in an emailed statement.  "I've been a part of a team that has enacted marriage equality for all Maryland couples, repealed the death penalty, protected consumers from abuses, and begun the task of reforming our tax code.

EAST COVENTRY, Pa. - The tiny hamlet of Frick's Lock - named for the farmer who settled it and the canal locks later built there - lies vacant and abandoned today. The canal that brought it life and prosperity is filled with dirt. Yet its heyday was not so long ago that old-timers and others around here can't still hear the echoes. It was a time when boats laden with coal - as much as a million tons a year - came through the town on their way to Philadelphia. Mules trudged the towpath, pulling the boats and urged on by a colorful, ever-changing cast of boatmen who swore and drank.

The late Ford Frick was known as the asterisk commissioner, but Fay Vincent may earn an exclamation point for what he plans to do.Thirty years ago Frick attached a verbal asterisk to the fabled single season home-run record by separating Roger Maris from Babe Ruth. Maris hit 61 homers in a 162-game season in 1961. Ruth hit 60 in a 154-game schedule in 1927. Since 1961, baseball's record books have separated the two players by the number of games played.Vincent wants to change that. "I am inclined to do whatever can be done," he said yesterday.
