DOROTHY A. KIRBY, 84, of Camp Hill, PA, and formerly of Baltimore, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2004, at Holy Spirit Hospital. She was a retired tailor for Pioneer Garmet Co., Baltimore, MD. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Camp Hill and its caring group. She was the widow of Calvin L. Kirby Jr. Survived by her son Calvin L. III of Camp hill, her daughter Sharon and her husband Bernard Rish of Freeland, PA, two grandchildren, Bernard Rish III and Mary Rish of Freeland, PA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Friday from her church.

In Baltimore County GBMC takes steps to control outbreak of bacterial illness TOWSON -- Greater Baltimore Medical Center has implemented measures to handle gastrointestinal bacteria illnesses contracted by eight patients in one of the hospital's rehabilitation units, a GBMC spokesman said yesterday. Five cases of C. difficile, the bacteria recognized as the major cause of infectious diarrhea occurring in hospitalized patients, were diagnosed last week, prompting GBMC to contact the county health department, hospital officials said.

Chester N. "Bill" Spicer, founder and owner of a Freeland auto repair and parts business, died of a stroke Monday at York Hospital in York, Pa. He was 82. The Freeland native attended Baltimore County public schools until leaving to help support his family after the death of his father. As a youth, he showed an aptitude for fixing automobiles and rebuilding engines. After World War II service with an Army artillery unit in the Philippines, Luzon and Guadalcanal, Mr. Spicer established Spicer Motors and B&M Auto Parts on Middletown Road in 1946.

On Thursday, January 15, 2004, MARILYN KAY FREELAND, in Frederick, MD. She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, John and her loving children: sons, John Richard, Jr. and wife Christy, of Gaithersburg, MD, D. David and wife Jeanette, of Frederick, MD and her daughter Sandra, of West Palm Beach, FL and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred Naomi Ogle and Maurice Elmer Miller. A native of Baltimore, MD and graduate of Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD and Montgomery College, Rockville, MD. She practiced nursing for 20 years.

WHAT'S the purpose of a bridge? To carry a load and move traffic? Or to carry the eye and move the spirit? And a road - is speed the only limit worth enforcing? These are not burning environmental questions of our age, but they should be. Faster than we are losing water and air quality - and more irreversibly - we are losing beauty and character from our landscapes. It was a visit to the one-lane bridge on Dunk Freeland Road in northern Baltimore County that triggered this loss-of-bucolia jag. You come upon it, shaded by big, old red maples and black walnuts, as you descend a long, gentle curve to the riffled course of Little Deer Creek, meandering east toward the Susquehanna River.
