Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will join the mayor of San Francisco today for a day of service in Baltimore to collect on a Super Bowl wager that she won when the Ravens dominated the 49ers. The mayors will help AmeriCorps members revitalize a vacant lot in the Franklin Square neighborhood, repaint and repair a police station in Sandtown-Winchester and tutor third-graders in Cherry Hill. But first, Mayor Edwin M. Lee will join Rawlings-Blake at Faidley's Seafood in Lexington Market, where he will learn how to make a crab cake sandwich.

IF THE RENAISSANCE Harborplace Hotel's ''adoption'' of West Baltimore's Franklin Square area works, it could give a whole new meaning to the word ''networking.''''It may have the appearance of insurmountable,'' general manager Gary Oster says of the challenge of his luxury hotel's partnership with the poor neighborhood just 15 blocks away, ''but it's not impossible.'' The people of Franklin Square make the effort worthwhile, he explains. ''They are regular people who are working against irregular odds.

Many Harford doctors are registered to work at both Franklin Square and the two Upper Chesapeake Health System hospitals, Fallston General and Harford Memorial. Dr. Dean L. Vassar, a staff cardiologist at Fallston General, is one such doctor.He says he determines where to send patients based on what services the patient needs and which hospital has the best equipment for that patient.Vassar finds that in his practice, he admits most patients to Fallston General."We do have patients at Franklin Square, but 99 percent of our patients are admitted to Fallston," he said.

Area schools and literacy programs seek volunteers to help children and adults improve reading skills and to assist with related projects.
