WHEN I WAS ABOUT to visit Italy, one of my Italian friends told me that the frescoes by Giotto in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi were a ""must see." ... ....."They are something wonderful," my friend said. In the small town of Greccio, Italy, almost 800 years ago, St. Francis of Assisi celebrated Christmas with a live Nativity scene -- a simple portrayal of the birth of Jesus with cattle and donkeys brought in from nearby farms. "I wish to do something that will recall to memory the little Child who was born in Bethlehem and to set before our bodily eyes in some way, the inconveniences of his infant needs, how he lay in a manger, how, with an ox and an ass standing by, he lay upon hay where he had been placed," Francis is recorded to have said, according to an early biographer, Thomas of Celano.

St. Francis of Assisi loved and blessed all the creatures of Earth, from turtledoves to wolves. In memory of Francis' feast day, Oct. 4, some Howard County churches recognized local pets this week at Blessing of the Animals ceremonies. In front of St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville, the Rev. Greg Ferri led a brief Sunday afternoon service honoring all of God's creation. During the service he reminded listeners, all standing quietly with their pets, that God placed humans on Earth to be stewards of all living things.
