Serving up another week's worth of sports media notes, crunchy as matzo from a new box, though somewhat easier to digest: * ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd was just doing what a sports talk host is supposed to do - stir it up - when he went on a little rant Tuesday about how Orioles fans reacted to Mark Teixeira at Monday's opener. His opinion about how Teixeira's choice between less money and the Orioles and more money and the New York Yankees really wasn't a difficult choice has been offered in lots of places, and many fans surely weren't upset by it. However, when he was saying Teixeira would face six years of not contending by signing with the Orioles, he betrayed a lack of knowledge.

BOSTON (AP) -- Senior Mike Sanders will replace Tim Frager, the team's leading rusher, when Boston College (4-3) plays host to Syracuse (4-2-2) today.Frager's college career ended Monday night when the National Collegiate Athletic Association banned him for one year for testing positive for a substance on its list of banned drugs, and coach Jack Bicknell said yesterday that Frager's appeal was rejected. The fact it was a prescription drug didn't matter.Bicknell declined yesterday to identify the drug that showed up in last week's random test, but repeated Wednesday's school statement that it wasn't steroids, cocaine or marijuana.

The students stood up and looked around awkwardly. With some coaxing, they formed pairs and faced each other, then put out their hands. "Hi, nice to meet you," said Katie Frager, 11, after shaking the hand of Kerry Wilkes, 13. A little ways off, Monique Walker, 12, shook another student's hand and introduced herself. Then she looked away. "There's nothing to talk about," she said. "I don't know her." They'd get to that, promised Carol Haislip, who was teaching the communication skills class at Mount Airy Middle School.

Before he came to Baltimore, Ted Patterson worked two years for the late Curt Gowdy on his NBC radio show. Patterson said he would conduct interviews that aired on the program. Because the interviewees supposedly were talking with Gowdy, Patterson said he would show up at games wearing a sign that said, "Call me Curt." ray.frager@baltsun.com Read Ray Frager's blog at baltimoresun.com/mediumwell

Let's hope other broadcasters were taking note of Andrea Kremer's interview with Brett Favre at the end of NBC's NFL game Sunday night. As she was asking him whether he had just played his last game, Favre grew emotional. Kremer didn't milk the moment, didn't badger him but didn't get caught up, either. Respectfully, but firmly, she probed to find out if he was ready to announce his retirement. Jim Gray, were you watching? Just a small suggestion for Charley Casserly: When you're delivering your information on The NFL Today, try not to use "now" so much.
