Joseph V. Meyd Jr., 73, CSX designer, supervisorJoseph V. Meyd Jr., a retired CSX systems designer and data center supervisor, died of heart failure May 31 at St. Elizabeth Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. The Catonsville resident was 73.After graduating from Calvert Hall College in 1941, he joined the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Co., then served in the Army during World War II. He retired in 1983.The Baltimore native was an active communicant of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Catonsville for more than 40 years and received the Archdiocesan Medal of Honor in 1991.

Move over Derrick Love.Toney Fowlkes is in the building.Fowlkes, a North County senior, has done what some considered almost unthinkable.He broke two of Love's Anne Arundel County indoor records (500 and 300-meter dashes) that were thought to be invincible by county coaches and longtime track enthusiasts.Love, a 1989 Meade graduate, is considered by many the fastest runner ever at the high school level in the county.Love gained near-legendary status when he broke "The Rocket" Ismail's 200-meter record in a National Scholastic Indoor meet at the Naval Academy in 1989.

Thomas Eugene Fowlkes, who as a RETURN program coordinator at Sinai Hospital worked tirelessly to help people with brain injuries regain their independence and ability to work, died May 12 of AIDS at his Jessup residence. He was 40.Mr. Fowlkes joined the staff of RETURN, which was established at the Northwest Baltimore hospital in 1986, in 1990 as a facilitator and created the Community Reentry II program, which prepared patients to return to their homes and jobs."He had an enormous amount of patience and empathy, and could help people manage their grief and get them over the rough spots," said Fran Forstenzer, RETURN program manager.

COLLEGE PARK -- Troy Fowlkes' on-again, off-again career at Maryland appears over.Fowlkes, a linebacker who was The Sun's Defensive Player of the Year for North County High in 1993, said that team doctors have recommended that he not play this season. Fowlkes said he is academically eligible and will remain on scholarship this year, but sounded doubtful when asked if he would attempt to play next year or thereafter."The doctors say I have asthma," Fowlkes said. "A specialist recommended that I not play, and a team doctor agreed.

Pro footballNashville mayor presents stadium plan to lure NFL's OilersIntent on luring the Houston Oilers, the mayor of Nashville, Tenn., presented a plan yesterday for building the NFL team a $292 million open-air stadium that he hopes will be ready by 1998.Mayor Phil Bredesen said no new taxes or tax increases would be required to pay for the city's portion of the costs. Rather, the city would rely on several revenue sources including lease payments and the transfer of 1 percent of the city's hotel tax from the general fund.

Richard Abrams, a defensive lineman from Arundel, has left the Maryland football team. Abrams, who has three years of eligibility remaining, appeared in eight games as a true freshman last fall, and had five tackles. He is reportedly seeking a transfer to a Division I-AA school.Abrams' departure leaves Troy Fowlkes as the only scholarship player from the Baltimore area on the Terps.Fowlkes, a linebacker from North County, was a redshirt last season, when he was affected by an asthma-like ailment.

A 32-year-old Edgewood woman convicted of beating a neighbor in a violent fracas could face up to 29 years in prison, authorities said. A Harford County jury found Natasha Terresa Fowlkes guilty of first-degree assault of a 44-year-old man, who was beaten and stabbed in the attack and left paralyzed. Fowlkes was also found guilty of possession of a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property on Thursday. After the jury returned the verdict, Fowlkes' $30,000 bond was revoked and she was sent to the Harford County Detention Center.

A 32-year-old Edgewood woman helped lead a violent attack that left a neighbor paralyzed, a Harford County prosecutor said yesterday in opening statements at the woman's trial in Harford County Circuit Court. The lawyer for Natasha Terresa Fowlkes, however, said she was on her way to do laundry when she saw a mob clustered at a house in the 1900 block of Eloise Lane and only tried to make sure her daughter was safe. Fowlkes is charged with two counts each of first- and second-degree assault, and one count each of possession of a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property.

The fifth person charged with attempted murder in the neighborhood brawl in Edgewood on Sunday that left one man paralyzed was denied bail yesterday. After a bail review hearing in Harford County District Court, Natasha Fowlkes, 31, the mother of a 16-year-old charged previously, was returned to the Harford County Detention Center, where she had been held since her arrest on Wednesday. A preliminary hearing for Fowlkes is scheduled for Dec. 24 on charges that include attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, and two counts of assault, police said.

Harford County authorities arrested the mother of one of the teenagers charged with attempted murder in a neighborhood brawl Sunday in Edgewood, accusing her of participating in the fight that left her neighbor paralyzed. A day after pleading with a judge to release her 16-year-old daughter, Natasha Fowlkes was arrested at her home yesterday afternoon, a block from where the brawl occurred on Eloise Lane. Fowlkes, 31, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and two counts of assault, said Sgt. Christine Presberry, a Harford County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.
