S tate schools Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick finally seems to have seen the light regarding the sweeping changes Maryland must make to improve its schools - even though it took a stiff rebuff from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to deliver the message. If officials get serious about reforms that will keep Maryland competitive with other states, then it may be the best rejection letter we've ever received. Last week, the foundation turned down Maryland's application for a grant to help it seek millions of dollars in federal Race to the Top funds, money earmarked for states with a serious commitment to school reform.

Dr. Harriet Griggs Guild, a leading authority on children's kidney disease and founder of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, died last Friday of heart and pulmonary failure. She was 92.At the time of her death, she was living with a nephew, Dana B. Danielson, at Tracys Landing in Anne Arundel County.Private services were being held at her birthplace in Windham, Conn. A memorial service in Baltimore will be scheduled later.As a medical researcher, professor and physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital for 37 years, she played a major role in saving the lives of children suffering from kidney disease.

On November 21, 2004, WALTER DAILEY. With a heavy heart, I report that my wonderful husband, Walter Dailey passed away. His passing was very painless and he fought it to the end. It never crossed LaKebra Clark's mind that she'd donate one of her kidneys, let alone that it would go to her own father. The eldest of three children, Clark had always been close to her dad, Gregory Bryant, 47, a salesman in an auto dealership. A year ago, he became ill with hypertension, and doctors diagnosed kidney disease. Suddenly, it was time to help save his life. On Dec. 30, which happened to be Clark's 27th birthday, her father called and said, " 'I need you to come through for me,' " she recalled.

April is organ and tissue donor awareness month. There are nearly 2,300 people in Maryland who are on the waiting list for an organ or tissue transplant, says Karen Kennedy, director of clinical services at the Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland. These patients are waiting for all kinds of organs, including a heart, lung, kidney and pancreas. What kinds of transplants are most frequently in demand? The majority of those waiting are waiting for a kidney, and that is true both locally and throughout the United States.
