Anne Arundel County Executive John G. Gary is considering three sites for a possible public boat ramp. If he makes the right decision, it might be one of his most popular moves.By the same token, if he fumbles, residents will be angry.Anne Arundel boaters have complained for years about insufficient launch facilities. The county currently has only two public boat ramps, at Sandy Point State Park and at Annapolis' Truxtun Park, even though it has 432 miles of shoreline. Many boaters must travel a distance to launch their craft.

In the shadows of the Sparrows Point steel mills is a rich, urban wilderness -- a place where you can see spring emerging as you stand on a strip of sand strewn with old tires, plastic bottles, broken glass and other debris that has washed ashore. It's Fort Smallwood Park, lying at the gateway to the Baltimore harbor, where long-winged caspian terns and tiny tree swallows zigzag up the beach. Black-crowned night-herons row the air northward along the tree line. Sharp-shinned hawks glide through the early morning mist and cross the mouth of the Patapsco River on their way to breeding grounds in New England and Canada.

Everyone knows about Fort McHenry -- and how Francis Scott Key was so moved after seeing the American flag flying over it after a night of bombardment by the British in 1814 that he wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner."But Fort McHenry, built between 1775 and 1794, was just one of a network of forts constructed over the years to defend $l Baltimore. In addition to that restored fortress, remnants of four others stillremain: Fort Howard at North Point in Baltimore County; Fort Armistead at Hawkins Point in the city; Fort Smallwood in Anne Arundel County and Fort Carroll, a small artificial island in the Patapsco River next to the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge.

So, you're driving down Fort Smallwood Road near Duvall Highway and all of a sudden there's this big pig looming in front of you. Up on the roof, a huge, pink porker with a chef hat and apron, carrying a tray with a drink and, uh, a doughnut. The doughnut certainly makes sense. This is, after all, a a bakery. Complete with shelves full of pies and pastries, turnovers and tarts, cookies and cakes and danish. But the pig?Well, the two-story, cinder block building was a restaurant in the early 1950s when George Bolander and his father, bakers from Northeast Baltimore, took it over.
