Once it was a sign of how well bred you were: whether you knew your asparagus fork from your dessert fork. That's surprising when you consider that the fork is the upstart of eating utensils, arriving relatively late on the dining scene. In medieval times, it was used in Europe only as a serving piece. While Italy adopted it for eating during the Renaissance, England really didn't accept the newfangled implement until the second half of the 17th century. We no longer have separate forks for every sort of food; most place settings include only two, a dinner fork and a fork that can be used for salad or dessert.

My rice never turns out right. How do I get fluffy yet sticky rice that will clump on my fork? There are several methods for cooking long-grain white rice, the most common white rice in this country. Here's the method I use: Bring 2 cups of water to boil in a saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Add 1 cup rice and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt. Shake the pan a little to spread out the rice, cover, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat, uncover and place a dish towel over the pan. Replace the lid and let it stand.

Fork kind of happens without warning. A sign announcing DTC you're here stands by Vera Gordon's stone home on Harford Road just south of Fork Road. An American flag flies on a pole in the 15-acre pasture in front of Mrs. Gordon's home and four red horses graze on the tall grass.Mrs. Gordon, a 75-year-old widow, isn't home today. She's working over at the Long Green Valley Florists in nearby Glen Arm. She doesn't have to but says, "I've always liked dealing with the public.""My husband and I met in Fork -- I was a telephone operator here -- and we got married in 1941," she says.
