Margaret W. "Mardie" Robinson, a homemaker and volunteer, died Thursday from respiratory failure at Roland Park Place. She was 101. The daughter of a lumber company executive and a homemaker, Margaret Wilson Wood was born on Forest Road, now Keswick Road, in Roland Park, and was later raised on Woodlawn Road. Mrs. Robinson was the sister of H. Graham Wood, the noted Chesapeake Bay steamboat historian and author, who died in 1998. After graduating from Roland Park Country School in 1931, she worked as an administrator in a dental office and later for Anne Weems Williams, a Roland Park interior decorator.

Thirty-four people were displaced and seven injured by a two-alarm fire early Thursday in the 5600 block of Stevens Forest Road in Columbia. The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services reported that 10 apartments at the Autumn Crest complex were affected by the fire at 1:30 a.m. and that crews had to rescue about eight residents of the three-story building with ladders. According to Battalion Chief Gordon Wallace, seven residents were injured in the fire, and two adults and one child were taken to an area hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

For more than three years, the residents of Columbia's Oakland Mills Village have complained about speeding and motorists slamming into parked vehicles on Stevens Forest Road.Now Howard County engineers are considering a road-striping plan that they say would reduce speed and accidents on the road, which officials agree is overcrowded with speeding rush-hour commuters.This year, at least 31 accidents have occurred near Stevens Forest Road and Broken Land Parkway and eight elsewhere along Stevens Forest, police said.

Funeral arrangements were announced yesterday for Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, the 20-year-old Marine from Westminster who was killed in Iraq last week. Visiting hours are scheduled tomorrow, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Pritts Funeral Home, 412 Washington Road, Westminster. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:15 a.m. Friday at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster.
