The kerfuffle over the proposed wine store in Wegmans' newest location in Columbia heralds the next looming battle in consumers' fight to modernize Maryland's alcohol policy. The recent Howard County liquor board hearing demonstrated the intensity of both sides' arguments. The local retailers, backed by the alcohol distributors, fear increased competition — while consumer groups clamor for greater convenience and selection, and lower prices. The alcohol industry in Maryland has traditionally dictated its own regulations.

All day Tuesday, they came to the Grand Cru wine bar with swollen red eyes, hugging one another and trying to make sense of the loss of a good friend and boss. They lifted a glass and reminisced about Nelson Carey, the genial and worldly publican of Belvedere Square, whose Grand Cru has been a popular destination for a decade. Mr. Carey, whose European-style wine bar and patisserie was more than a home away from home for an eclectic and devoted band of regulars, died early Tuesday of heart failure at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

Tony Foreman of Foreman Wolf will help transform Everyman Theatre into an "Italian festival" of food and wine on April 5 for a fundraising event for the theater. Organizers invite guests to "wander the rooms of our new home to find crudo paired with festive sparking wines, grilled meats and pastas alongside the bold flavors of red wine, Italian pastries, silent and live auctions of food, wine and travel and more!" There will be music from Baltimore's Bosley along with fencing, cabaret, comedy and dancing.

Perhaps no nation has as passionate a grass-roots movement to preserve endangered species of cheese and protect vegetable rights as does Italy.Slow Food is a food and wine organization created 13 years ago by an Italian journalist, Carlo Petrini, as an antidote to fast food. More than 100,000 people were expected to attend Slow Food's Salone del Gusto, a five-day food fair that ends tonight.Now with 40,000 members in 35 countries, Slow Food's manifesto warns against "obsessive worrying about hygienic matters" and pledges to preserve such endangered foods as Firiki apples from Greece and Sicilian lattume di tonno, sperm of male tuna.

Morton's, a fine foods and spirits shop, says it plans to move from its 10 W. Eager St. location at the end of January. In a newsletter sent this month to customers, Morton's owners Robert and Janis Talbott said an "unrealistic" rent and decreasing sales were the reasons for the move.They said they are in the process of looking for a new location for their Mount Vernon business, which, over the past nine years, has won several awards from area magazines and newspapers for its food and wine service.

German wine. It's one of the most magical wines on earth. It is delicate yet full-flavored. Aromatic, yet firmly chiseled. Like scrimshaw, it is etched. Unfortunately, so many of its low-end offerings still give the entire category a bad name. German wine is not sugar water. Far from it. And the good stuff is not coming at you at $10 a bottle. Take the Donnhoff Estate Riesling Trocken 2011, Pfalz ($23) The nose is all talc, delicate and slightly pollen. On the palate there is jasmine.

The 41st Annual Greek Food & Cultural Festival starts Friday. This is the one at the Greek Cathedral of the Annunciation in Midtown-Belvedere, when everyone sits on the cathedral's steps in the sunshine and stuffs themselves silly. Under the big tent on Preston Street, there's stuff like gyros, souvlaki and fried calamari. But you have to go inside the cathedral and down into the basement for the baked lamb shank, spanakopita, pastitio, roast chicken and stuffed grape leaves. New this year: a Saturday night party in the tent, with a live band.

Alan Mark Silbergeld, a retired Consumer Union attorney and consumer advocate who was an aficionado of vocal music, died Friday of complications from lymphoma at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Homeland resident was 72. "He was a leading consumer advocate on federal policy in Washington for the last 40 years," said Stephen Brobeck, Consumer Federation of America executive director and a friend. "He also loved Baltimore. " Born in Greenville, Ill., and raised in St. Louis, Mr. Silbergeld earned a government degree at Indiana University and a law degree from Washington University.

Food and wine tasting The Y of Central Maryland's annual "Food & Wine Tasting" takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Dancel Family Center Y, 4331 Montgomery Road. Now that Labor Day has passed and bathing suit season is officially over, the New Jersey beach town of Cape May is ready to fatten you up. The charming town, known for its Victorian architecture and stunning beaches, is once again hosting the Cape May Food and Wine Festival. The event, now in its 14th year, runs nine days, starting Saturday and ending Sept. 26. The centerpiece is this weekend's Harvest Wine Festival at the Cape May Winery, which for the first time will be two days instead of one. Elsewhere, restaurants will host progressive dinners, tastings and special deals.
