PONTIAC, Mich. -- They don't resent each other, and they don't resent the media. They resent the coach. Let's get that straight. Andre Ware, Rodney Peete and Erik Kramer, the three quarterbacks on this odd little merry-go-round in silver and blue stretch uniforms. Point the finger at one man: Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes. In this way, they are no different than most American workers. They blame the boss. And, like most workers, they have to bite their tongue and keep it to themselves.Andre Ware played all day Sunday in the win over Phoenix at the Silverdome.

In a world of wines meant to go with food, Vinho Verde stands out as one best for just sipping on its own. These Portuguese "green" wines — made from under-ripe white grapes — are typically fresh, lively and slightly fizzy, with bright fruit and a salty tang. This Aveleda is a wonderful example that took me back to the streets of Lisbon, where the locals swill Vinho Verde by the pitcher. It goes well with fish, but food is definitely optional. 2009 Aveleda Fonte Vinho Verde From: Portugal Price: $10 Serve with: itself

PHILADELPHIA -- Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes said he doesn't expect any negative fallout from Lions owner William Clay Ford after yesterday's 58-37 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.L The Lions were never in the game, trailing 38-7 at the half. When the Lions were 3-6 this season, Ford gave Fontes an ultimatum of advancing to the playoffs, or be fired. The Lions rallied with seven straight wins."Well, we got here," said Fontes, whose team was 3-6 outside its home dome this season. "We have been in the playoffs the past couple of years and out so fast.

PONTIAC, Mich. -- First, there was the 18-minute gap in the Richard Nixon tapes. Now, there's a 60-minute gap -- a full game -- in the Detroit Lions' videotapes. As far as coach Wayne Fontes is concerned, the game -- Sept. 1 in Washington -- didn't occur, and he would just as soon nobody produced any incriminating evidence to the contrary."That game is in the archives," Fontes said, laughing. "It's burned and destroyed. We will not look at that film again."Not even to study formations or tendencies or techniques?

It's almost as much a tradition in the fall in Detroit as the introduction of the new model year for cars: Wayne Fontes is once again on the hot seat.In his first seven seasons as Detroit Lions coach, Fontes was the definition of mediocrity. He was 52-53.Each time he has seemed on the verge of losing his job, he has managed to rally the team. He took Detroit to the playoffs three times, though the Lions posted only one playoff victory in those years.Last year, he got a two-year contract extension when the Lions rebounded from a 2-4 start to make the playoffs.

PONTIAC, Mich. -- The NFL's new face of success stands out from the gruff and stoic figures who patrol the sidelines.Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes wears his emotions not just on his sleeve -- they run from head to toe.In the course of a football game or an interview, his face is a pattern of worry lines and laugh wrinkles.Failure didn't change him in his first three seasons as head coach of the Lions. Neither has winning. He came to Detroit as defensive coordinator in 1985, hugging, cajoling, pampering, pleading, demanding -- whatever it took -- to get the maximum effort out of players.

A proposal to build a two-story church on a small residential parcel along U.S. 40 in western Ellicott City is stirring hostility among nearby residents, who are angry at having to fight a new battle in what they see as a continuing war to keep more dense projects at bay. Friends of Font Hill formed in 2003 to oppose Kimberly Homes' plans to build 30 townhouses for seniors in their area of older detached homes. The group won the fight, and 10 detached homes were built instead. In 2006, members also defeated the Howard County Housing Commission's plans to build a four-story, moderate-income apartment complex on a 2.5-acre commercially zoned site in the same area.

Molly Ivins, the irrepressibly irreverent political humorist and syndicated columnist who skewered legislators, governors and presidents, especially those from her beloved Texas, died yesterday at her home in Austin after a long battle with cancer. She was 62. Ms. Ivins learned in 1999 that she had a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. After overcoming two recurrences, she became ill again last year as the disease spread through her body. Her death was announced by the Texas Observer, where she began her career 30 years ago. In her last weeks, she devoted her waning energy to what she called "an old-fashioned newspaper campaign" against President Bush's plan to escalate the Iraq war. "We are the people who run this country.

This Italian red is a real overachiever when it comes to quality in this price range. It's a medium-bodied blend of Tuscany's traditional sangiovese grape and the merlot of Bordeaux. In this case the combination works, with the merlot adding softness and lushness to the spice and structure of the sangiovese. It offers well-rounded black cherry fruit and hints of Mediterranean herbs, with good acidity and liveliness. In addition, it's versatile and ready to drink. Serve with pasta, roast chicken, red meat.

Even as residents in Font Hill marshal forces for an epic fight with the county over a proposed 59-unit apartment complex for moderate-income families, there is every indication they already may have won. First, they have a powerful ally in newly installed County Executive Kenneth S. Ulman, who has declared his unwavering opposition to the project on 2.5 acres off Frederick Road in Ellicott City. Perhaps as important was the removal late Monday of Leonard S. Vaughan by the administration as director of the Department of Housing and Community Development, which eliminated a chief proponent of the development.
