A 25-year-old Woodsboro man was critically injured yesterday when he lost control of his car during a high-speed chase with state police in Frederick County and rammed a pickup truck, according to police.William John Campbell was flown by a state police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center at University Hospital in Baltimore, where he was reported in critical but stable condition last night.Sgt. Terry L. Hill of the Frederick barracks said the chase began just before 2 a.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a car that was moving erratically on U.S. 15, about 5 miles north of Frederick.

The motorcyclist killed running a red light in attempt to flea police on U.S. 40 in Ellicott City Tuesday was identified by Howard County police Wednesday. The driver's been identified as Terrence Alan Robinson, 24, of Windsor Mill, police said.  The motorcyclist was speeding westbound on his 2013 Kawasaki Ninja around 11:13 a.m. June 18 when an officer tried to pull him over, police said. The officer stopped the pursuit when the motorcyclist didn't stop, police said. Witnesses told police the driver sped through the red light at U.S. 40 and Normandy Drive and was running a red light at U.S. 40 and Rogers Avenue when he was struck by a 2001 Saturn sedan making a legal left turn on a green arrow from U.S. 40 onto Rogers Avenue.

A 25-year-old Severna Park man has been sentenced to eight years in prison on charges stemming from an incident in July in which he led police on a high-speed chase through four counties that ended when he was wounded.Shawn Alfred Chowanetz of the 1200 block of Purnell Road received the sentence Monday after Arundel Circuit Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr. reviewed his criminal history.Chowanetz has been convicted of drunken driving five times and three times of fleeing and eluding police, Judge Thieme noted.

A 29-year-old Point of Rocks man was killed Thursday when his motorcycle left the road as he fled from a Maryland State Police traffic stop near Hagerstown, authorities said. Zachary A. Macintosh, of the 1600 block of Gibbons Road, was pronounced dead around 1 p.m. along eastbound Route 40 near Beverly Road, where his 1999 Suzuki GSXR-750 motorcycle went off the road, State Police said. Hagerstown Barrack commander Lt. Michael Fluharty saw a man on a motorcycle, later identified as Macintosh, going between 75 and 80 mph in a 45 mph zone, and tried to pull him over, State Police said.

Two accidents, one in which teen-agers crashed a car believed to be stolen while fleeing police, claimed the lives of two men in Baltimore early yesterday.The first accident occurred at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue about 12: 30 a.m. when a man running across the intersection was hit by a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup, according to Sgt. Scott Rowe, a Baltimore police spokesman.Rowe did not know which way the pickup was traveling. The unidentified victim died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Fellow students, friends and family members yesterday mourned the death of Marc David Levy, a promising painter with an eccentric flair who was killed Friday when a driver fleeing police slammed into his car.Levy, who turned 21 last month, was a senior at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, a school of 1,200 in downtown Baltimore, where he majored in painting.He was driving his Honda Civic when a 1999 Nissan Altima with at least two police cruisers following it ran a red light at East 27th and St. Paul streets and broadsided him.Yesterday, relatives gathered with Levy's parents, Stephen and Miriam, and their other son, Jason, 17, at their Reisterstown home amid oil-on-canvas self-portraits Levy had painted.

In Wednesday's editions, the status of Redskins running back Terry Allen in regard to a July accident was reported incorrectly. Allen allegedly was intoxicated when he crashed his Ferrari into a tree in Monroe, Ga., and was charged with driving under the influence and fleeing police at 133 mph.The Sun regrets the errors.Pub Date: 9/11/97

Police find suspect hanging in his cellA man arrested for allegedly stealing a truck and fleeing police was found hanging by his T-shirt in an Annapolis Police Department holding cell Thursday.Carl Lee Mullins, 41, of no fixed address was cut down from the bars by an officer who went to question him. He was treated by paramedics and taken to Crownsville Hospital Center, where he was released Friday.

In a Cinderella case of police work, Baltimore County officers arrested a limping suspect in a Tuesday night motel robbery attempt after matching him to a shoe found near the apparent getaway car. Police said the would-be robber fled without money from the Star Motel in the 9600 block of Pulaski Highway after the owner heard a commotion in the office over an intercom and asked his clerk if she was all right. The owner called 911. Officers pursued a suspect about three miles to Eastern Boulevard and Wilbur Road, where he got out of the car and lost a shoe.

Teen accused of speeding, fleeing policeAn 18-year-old Westminster man was charged with several traffic violations after driving a motorcycle at speeds of up to 110 mph in the Taylorsville area Saturday morning, Maryland State Police reported.Police first saw Patrick Mercer Klein of Ridge Road driving a 1989 Yamaha motorcycle allegedly at 98 mph on Route 26 at Hooper Road. Mr. Klein turned north on Hooper Road, then east on Sams Creek Road to Route 27, driving as fast as 110 mph, police said.

A robbery suspect crashed a car into a building in West Baltimore Tuesday morning after fleeing from police and was arrested after trying to run away from the wreck, police said. The driver, whom police said is a robbery suspect but did not further identify, was driving in the 2200 Block of Druid Hill Avenue in the Druid Heights neighborhood when the department's Regional Auto Theft Task Force attempted to stop the car, police said. The car sped off and ultimately crashed into a building in the 2100 block of W. North Avenue less than a mile away.

Baltimore County Police are searching for an Essex man who struck two police vehicles when detectives attempted to arrest him at his home for child sexual abuse charges Thursday. Police said Foster Dove III, 38, of the 1600 block of Williams Avenue, saw the detectives walk up to his house when he ran to his car and struck two police vehicles. His car was recovered nearby but Dove had fled on foot. He is wanted for sexually abusing two children and producing pornography depicting the abuse.

Meddaugh Ambrose had parked on the west side of South Carey Street on Thursday afternoon during a trip to get lunch when, for reasons she can't quite pinpoint, she moved her car to the other side of the street. That move would prove fortuitous. Moments later, a blue Honda came flying down Carey Street, hitting a pickup truck passing through the intersection at Washington Boulevard and sending both vehicles spinning in a twisted wreck that came to rest behind a light pole — right where Ambrose's car had been.

A 22-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday night after leading Laurel Police on a chase as she threw items from her vehicle's window. Officers initially attempted to stop the vehicle, which had a suspended registration, around 8:30 p.m. in the 14100 block of Baltimore Avenue. The driver drove away and fled the police, and was seen throwing items out of the window; police recovered bags of cocaine and marijuana from the roadway. The driver eventually got out of the vehicle and ran, but police apprehended her in the 11600 block of South Laurel Drive.

A 29-year-old New Windsor man died Monday after fleeing police in Finksburg, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office said. The man ignored a deputy's attempts to pull him over at 6:25 a.m. as he sped onto Old Gamber Road. The driver turned right onto Old Westminster Pike, into a parking lot in the 2200 block of Baltimore Boulevard and back on to Baltimore Boulevard when the Dodge Ram he was driving struck an eastbound Ford van. The drivers of both vehicles were transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center, where the 29-year-old man died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident.

A 20-year-old Ocean City man awaiting trial on more than a dozen charges in connection to six house burglaries in the beach town this spring was arrested again this weekend for allegedly stealing a car and fleeing police, Ocean City Police said Monday. Alexander George Ellis, of the 100 block of Sandy Hill Drive in Ocean City , was eventually caught early Saturday morning after ditching the stolen vehicle and trying to escape police by jumping into the water, police said.

Howard County police charged a man and woman arrested in Columbia last week with possession of drugs and a sawed-off shotgun.The man also was charged with assault and fleeing police when officers tried to search his car, a police report said.Police said they approached a car in the Clary's Forest Pool parking lot at 11 p.m. Thursday after smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle.After the driver was asked to step out of the car, he assaulted a police officer and fled on foot, according to the police report.

A man with a record of theft convictions was being held on $105,000 bond yesterday at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, charged with fleeing police in a stolen station wagon twice last week.Police say the latest incident ended in a crash and his arrest.State police said Kenneth T. Brunetti, 27, who had addresses in Owings Mills and Millersville, was charged with three counts of first-degree assault, destruction of property, fleeing and eluding police, and driving on a suspended license.

Eastern Shore police officers leaving a meeting at the U.S. District Court building in downtown Baltimore on Wednesday night spotted a wanted man and attempted to apprehend him, leading to a car crash, state police confirmed. Spokesman Greg Shipley said the officers, from Wicomico County and part of a federal drug task force, were leaving the meeting when they saw Shawn L. Brown driving a BMW. He said they were familiar with Brown and knew he was wanted on a drug warrant from their area.  Shipley said Brown realized he was being followed, and began "driving evasively.

A 40-year-old Baltimore man who crashed his Acura into an elderly driver's car while fleeing police last year was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in federal prison for dealing heroin after drugs were discovered in his abandoned car. Umar Burley also pleaded guilty in Baltimore Circuit Court this month to vehicular manslaughter in connection with the Northwest Baltimore crash, which killed 86-year-old Elbert Davis, the father of a police officer....
