Down 9-7 at the half, No. 9 Annapolis (2-0) scored two touchdowns in the first five minutes of the third period and went on to take its home opener, 21-9, over Westminster last night.Roland Fowlkes scored on an 8-yard run to cap the initial drive of the second half, and Eric Pickett's fumble recovery at the Westminster 9 on the ensuing kickoff set up Marty Sellers' touchdown run.It was the second touchdown of the game for Sellers (19 carries, 147 yards), and Fowlkes kicked all three extra points.

In a highly anticipated rematch, host Hammond fended off a valiant challenge by South Carroll and gave the Cavaliers their first loss of the season, 34-30, at a tri-meet yesterday. The No. 3 Golden Bears (6-0 overall, 6-0 in the county) also routed Glenelg (0-7, 0-4), 70-3; and South Carroll, ranked eighth and 11-1 overall, defeated the Gladiators, 57-12.The surprise of the day was South Carroll junior Mike Muller's near upset of Glenelg senior Jimmy O'Connor. The state champion at 145 was down 6-3 after the first period and 10-5 after the second before he rallied for six unanswered points to nip Muller, 11-10.

COLLEGE PARK -- In a season of upsets, the University of Maryland almost pulled off perhaps the biggest last night.Almost.But North Carolina midfielder Donnie McNichol, racing from behind to the left of the goal, scored with 14 seconds left in the game, as the second-ranked and top-seeded Tar Heels defeated the No. 5 Terps, 11-10, last night in the championship game of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Byrd Stadium. The winning goal came off a set play after North Carolina (11-2)

Before the wrestling season began, South Carroll figured that the road to a third consecutive county regular-season championship went through perennial powerhouse Westminster. Thanks to capturing six of the first seven weight classes, the fifth-ranked Cavaliers bulldozed the visiting Owls, 43-19, and grabbed their prize in Winfield last night. Four of those six wins came off pins, and senior 171-pounder Chris Currence's second-period pin put to rest any thoughts about a Westminster comeback.

Dulaney's Josh Tracy thrives, defensively, alongside teammates Scott Williams and Tim Bardzik. That much was evident in yesterday's 14-9 win by the Lions at Baltimore County rival Eastern Tech, where the trio helped goalie Nick Mowbray clamp down on the Mavericks in the second half. But give Tracy an opening, and he can be downright offensive."If I get 10 feet between any two people, something happens inside of me and I just go," said Tracy, who has a full scholarship to play at Ohio State.

If the season's first month is any indication, Howard's wrestling program, which has languished in the county's lower division for years, might be on the verge of a comeback. And if last night's 47-28 victory over visiting Edgewood is a valid barometer, the Lions could be making their move soon. The Lions recorded seven pins, including six in the first period, to improve their record to 5-1. They also did it despite a two-week layoff."This is the best team we've had since I've been here," said senior 125-pounder Mark Grinspoon, a four-year performer who has wrestled well through the bad times.

This was almost a flawless performance by the Baltimore Skipjacks.Baltimore dominated the tough Springfield Indians for almost the entire 60 minutes last night and walked away with a 5-2 victory before 2,231 at the Baltimore Arena. The win over the two-time defending Calder Cup champions ended a three-game winless streak at home for the Skipjacks. Baltimore was 0-2-1 in its past three games at the Arena before last night's game. But the Skipjacks left little doubt early last night that they were on the way a win, erupting for three straight goals in the second period for a 4-1 lead.
