One firefighter suffered burns and four others sustained minor injuries while battling an early morning blaze on Friday in Southeast Baltimore, according to fire officials. They were taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, with one firefighter being treated for first-degree burns to the face and a possible broken arm. The fire began about 6 a.m. in the unit block of N. East Ave., in the Baltimore-Linwood neighborhood. The two-story brick rowhouse was unoccupied at the time, according to a fire department spokesman, but neighbors say a family lives there.

Fifty Baltimore County firefighters battled a house fire in the Hampton area on Sunday afternoon, the county Fire Marshal's office said. None of the seven family members living in the home were injured, officials said. Firefighters were called to the scene at about 12:40 p.m. and found heavy fire on the second floor of the home in the 1500 block of Providence Road. It took about an hour to get the fire under control, said Bruce Schultz, a captain at the Office of the Fire Marshal, in an email.

Five people were injured after a two-alarm fire broke out inside a West Baltimore building, and firefighters had to evacuate during the heavy snow Wednesday night, a department a spokesman said. Firefighters were called to the unit block of S. Augusta Ave., near Old Frederick Road, about 7:30 p.m., as traffic all over the Baltimore area came to a standstill. Battalion Chief Kevin Cartwright, a department spokesman, said a three-story rowhouse caught fire, and five people were injured as they attempted to escape the flames.

Two firefighters were injured while working to extinguish a blaze in a vacant home in Better Waverly, a city fire spokesman said. The firefighters responded to the 3000 block of Independence Street at about 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, said Chief Kevin Cartwright. Their injuries were not life-threatening, he said. One was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and the other to the Public Service Infirmary at Mercy Medical Center, Cartwright said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A firefighter was injured battling a two-alarm fire at a debris-filled, single-family home in Northwest Baltimore on Monday morning when he fell through a floor into the home's basement, according to the Baltimore Fire Department. Firefighters responded just before 9 a.m. to the home in the 4200 block of Groveland Avenue, in the city's West Arlington neighborhood, and found heavy smoke, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a department spokesman. When firefighters entered the home, they determined the fire had originated in the basement but had “extended into the walls” and was traveling into the first and second floors as well, Cartwright said.

Anne Arundel County firefighters battled merging brush fires Friday afternoon in Glen Burnie that stretched for a mile. Division Chief Michael Cox said at about 3:30 p.m. that the blaze near Route 100 between Interstate 97 and Route 170 was contained. He said it appeared that no one had been injured and that the blaze touched no buildings but may have reached a construction site. The fire may have started as a number of small spot fires and spread, he said. Valerie Burnette Edgar, spokeswoman for the State Highway Administration, said that at about 6:30 p.m. the right lane of westbound Route 100 remained closed due to the fire, but the other westbound lanes were open.

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries Monday evening when a building collapsed during a four-alarm fire in West Baltimore. The fire began at and significantly damaged a three-story brick building and adjacent lumberyard in the 600 block of Pennsylvania Ave. called Penn Lumber, fire officials said. A deli next door also was damaged. Nearly 30 fire firetrucks and 100 firefighters were called in to battle the fire in Seton Hill and were still at the scene at 8:30 p.m. Conditions in the building worsened rapidly once firefighters responded in the late afternoon, city fire spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright said.

A house fire in Anne Arundel County sent two people to the hospital Saturday morning and took 60 fire personnel from four departments half an hour to bring under control, fire officials said. The fire in the 900 block of Malvern Hill Drive in Davidsonville was reported at around 7 a.m. Saturday, Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Michael Pfaltzgraff said. When firefighters arrived they found fire and smoke billowing from the basement, he added. The responding unit called a second alarm, and firefighters from the Annapolis, U.S. Naval Academy and Prince George's County fire departments responded to the scene.

ACCOKEEK - One person is dead after a house fire in Accokeek, in southern Prince George's County, and firefighters said they had a hard time reaching the location because of the snow. Firefighters from Prince George's and Charles counties responded to the fire Saturday afternoon. One person was found inside the home and was pronounced dead. A three-alarm fire ripped through an apartment complex in New Carrollton on Monday afternoon, injuring two firefighters, destroying 11 apartments and causing residents in more than 30 others to lose utilities, according to the Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department. In all, the blaze at the Sutton Walk complex caused an estimated $750,000 in damages, the fire department said. Firefighters responded to the 5300 block of 85th Avenue about 1 p.m. for multiple 911 calls reporting a fire, and upon arrival found heavy flames showing from the top two floors of the apartment building, officials said.
